Oliver Wyman Internship or Google BOLD Internship?

I have offers for both, and am hoping you guys can help me make the decision as to which offer to take.

Here is some background info:

  • These are offers for this summer (I'm a junior)

  • I've always thought I wanted to go into consulting, but applied to the Google BOLD Internship on a whim and ended up getting an offer. Tech has always been something I've been interested in but haven't really pursued it seriously cause I fell into the whole bandwagon of consulting

  • I'm interested in consulting because it's a great learning opportunity, I enjoy working in teams, I think traveling could be fun, and I generally enjoy solving problems. I also know the exit opportunities are great. When I think about what exits I might be interested in, strategy roles in tech is what comes to mind but I don't really know, so i was hoping consulting would help me figure that out

  • The Google BOLD Internship would be in their OPG group. Don't know much about the group but not sure if it matters

Not really sure what Google OPG is, but OW will be a good consulting experience and allow you to exit into S&O at FAANG or top startups. If you want to end up in a strategy role at a tech co, consulting is generally a well trodden path as opposed to lateraling internally (especially at a big company like Google)

I made this same decision last summer. I got offers from Google in OPG and many T2 firms and decided to run with Google because of the name recognition and interest in tech. After my experience I ended up deciding to not go back to Google and recruited for consulting. Now I’m going to OW full time.

While I considered many things in this decision, for me it came down to 2 things -

  1. Google’s comp in OPG is really weak compared to consulting (15-20k difference off the bat)
  2. The work in consulting and path in consulting more easily leads to the type of roles I am interested. In the long run I want to do Corp. strategy or Corp Dev in the tech space and I knew that the OPG role at google didn’t have as clear of trajectory there.

Feel free to pm me and we can talk about this a bit more!
