Online Applications - Recent Industry Developments

Hi,

I'm applying for an operations position at Barclays Capital - I've encountered a bit of a problem on the online application form. One of the three competency questions is:

Describe a recent development in the industry. What implications might this development have for our firm or the division to which you have applied?
(90 words max)

So I need to come up with a recent event that I can relate to Barclays Capital and describe (succinctly) how it effects Barclays Capital (I don't think I can really relate it directly to operations).

My problem is what industry development I should focus on - possibly the (failed) takeover attempt of ABN Amro? Although I'm not sure if it'd be a good idea to focus on a failed attempt. Or perhaps the effects of subprime mortgages on the business as a whole? But again, I'm not sure what area to focus on and if I should focus on negative implications on the firm.

So, if anybody has any help/advice on good topics to write about, I'd really appreciate your info!

Regards,
John

Thanks for your input John Mack.

My main problem was relating the unsuccessful takeover to Barclays Capital and the future implications it would have. I was thinking something along the lines of future growth potential - organic vs. inorganic, etc, but it's not a very "strong" topic, or at least not in a way that I'm able to elaborate about.
