online degrees
why are they so frowned upon in the world of finance? given that most elite universities have some virtual options in today’s day and age, how long until an online degree is given a decent level of respect? corona virus has everyone studying, working, and shopping from home right now, so I’m curious whether this pandemic will help expedite the process.
I think this whole SARS-CoV-2 issue will help highlight that high quality instruction can be provided online from some of the world's top universities.
Granted, I'm biased as I'm working on a second masters from Georgia Tech as we speak.
That said, I've had to work on projects with groupmates from UK and Singapore whilst I sit in the Boston area. I've not only learned something online, but also learned how to manage my time when I don't have set lecture hours but still have deadlines to meet. Overall, my OMS program has been a great prep sequence to all this nonsense. I can manage my time, I know how to mute my cellphone during a conference call, I can use but Dropbox and Git with ease, and can keep myself working even when I don't have an office that someone can pop into every five minutes. In fact, I'd almost argue that my productivity has gone up the last two days (don't tell my boss, because I can already feel the stircrazy that will likely hit full force around mid-day Thursday)
Now if I could just get my kids to settle down during the day; most of the studying I do is after they go to bed every night...!
I personally think that online education is a futuristic approach to learning. we can pause and rewind lectures which allows us to pick up on the subtleties and nuances that come from such seasoned minds. I hope the world can recognize the value of technological advancements as they are applied to education
Like electric cars, we know online education is the future but it'll take a while to fully implement.
I like the analogy, but I don’t think Tesla’s are ridiculed by most luxury car drivers to the extent that online degrees are shunned by finance professionals. I personally am going to get an online degree but I am well aware of the uphill battle I’m facing to get my foot in the door in IB
