Open Letter to Banks - Incompotent Remote Deposit Capture Not Compatible with Macintosh Desktops
Until recently CapitolOne offered the best system to deposit checks into a online banking account via a desktop. All one had to do is take picture of the back in front of a check and upload the images. Since I have a higher end Canon Rebel this meant I could take one image of multiple check fronts and backs at once and simply duplicate the images using key codes and then crop each image in PhotoShop as opposed to having to take individual images of the back and front of each check. Having nearly 20 years of experience with PS this was completed in seconds.
CaptiolOne dropped this service and moved to a mobile app which they say is faster.
No, Capitol One, a mobile app is not faster. I can take pictures of multiple checks at once instead of having to take pictures of individual check fronts and backs with a worthless mobile phone camera. There is simply no comparison to the photo quality of my Canon to even a high end iPhone. My Desktop is on a high speed fiber optic connection just 1,500 feet from the telephone company's hub. Just to get a bare minimum very slow WiFi connection on a mobile phone I need to drive 15 miles away and then attempt to take photos of checks outside and hope its not raining, its -40, or the wind is blowing. In the time it take for the phone to wakeup and input the phone's password and the OS's password using a stylus (because my hands to are too large to use the screen accurately) I could already have been done using my Macintosh desktop. Logging into my bank account on my Mac takes maybe 3 seconds tops using a browser bookmark.
As a result of this I cancelled my personal checking and savings account and business account with CapitalOne as they obviously do not care about customer service. They frankly need to sell their U.S. banking operations back to INGDirect.
After examining various other banks I was really shocked to find just how incompetent the industry is. All appear to have adopted a new Remote Deposit Capture system which hasn't been compatible with Macintosh desktops for years. This RDC system requires the use of Java, which was removed by default from all Macs back in 2011 for security reasons. Macintosh users could manually install various versions of java - from Oracle and a legacy version from Apple; however, this is not an option because it requires a browser to operate in 32-bit mode and requires a 32-bit install of java. Both of these haven't been used in years on the Macintosh and haven't been compatible with Macs for years. The only way you could possible use it is if you purchased a old Mac, but then you may find that although the java plugin might work with RDC you may find that the browser will not work the bank's main web site so you'll never be log into your account to even use the RDC system. Some banking sites even mention that Macintosh users need to switch to 32-bit mode on their help pages - information that has been out of date for years.
The level of incompetence in the banking industry is truly outstanding!
If you worked for my company you'd be fired long ago for not doing your job!
