Operations Summer Internship offer : accept it or not ?
Hi guys,
Next week I have a spring at Morgan Stanley in the operations division. I applied by chance, as I am mainly interested in investment banking. I've already done internships at Rothschild & Co and Société Générale in investment banking.
So I was wondering: if I get an offer for a summer in operations, is it a mistake to accept it? Knowing that I probably won't have time to apply for summers because I'll be on internship.
I don't want to work in London so I'm not interested in a full time offer. I see this summer more as just a Morgan Stanley line on my CV and I will already have one and a half years of experience in investment banking by the end of the summer of 2022. What would you do?
yeah this is definitely a troll
I'm pretty serious actually ahah
If anyone has an opinion, I'd love to hear it :)
Assuming youre in your 1st year of a 3 year masters (where you take a gap year?) and also assumed you have been doing off-cycles in the Paris office for Roths and SG.
Im guessing for whatever reason you didnt convert either of those, my EB converts 1 EU regional off-cycles per year on average. If you also dont want to work in London then are you planning to get into IB in London then work for 1-2 years and move to Paris? Or do you just want to start in Paris? The 'safer bet' is to go via London and just move to regional office since London has the most headcounts and if you have 1.5 years experience dont see why wouldnt you get offers at every bank.
With regards to operations, dont see why wouldnt you accept it because you can still re-recruit this September for Summer 2022. If you get no IB internships its still better to have a line on your CV anyway. Also, you will always find time to apply if you want to make time (i.e. dont sleep and maybe lose some weekends).
Slight troll/flex post to be honest, if you have 1.5 years of experience you already know how the recruitng game works - I feel you already know the answer to your question so kudos to your career so far.
I'm actually in my first year of a master's degree and I have my gap year that I'm starting at SG. I should do another internship in investment banking from January to June 2022, I hope in a BB. Hence the 1.5 years in investment banking after the summer of 2022. Today I only have one internship as experience so I don't really know how everything works.
The offer for the Summer in Operations is for the summer of 2022. I don't think I will be able to do a summer in 2023 because I will have just finished my master's degree and I will be looking for a full time offer in Paris.
So my question is: what is a summer in operations worth on a CV? Will the Morgan Stanley name be valued even if it's in operations (in the perspective of IB)?
To be honest it really wasn't about flexing, maybe I was clumsy. I just have a lot of questions about this summer, whether I should take it or risk to getting nothing by turning it down and trying the IBD summers.
Makes sense - apologies for confusion
Summer in Operations is better than no summer on CV which is always true - it probably won't help you recruit IB but it definitely won't harm you in any way shape or form. You can always ask MS HR if there is a chance you can interview for MS IB if you convert your spring week, just ask if there is a process where they can fast track you to the phone interviews/ACs. If not then accept MS Ops summer and just email and say "I won't be able to join the summer class anymore due to another opportunity that is more aligned with my interest....." when you have got an IB offer.
Lets say you dont get any IB for 2022 Summer you can still do a summer internship in summer 2023 (at least in London you can) as a final year masters student (I did that albeit not as part of a 3 year masters but makes no difference). So basically just apply again. Good thing about this is if you convert your ops summer you will have a job for a year (because you will need to wait a year to start FT in most cases) whilst you wait to start your FT IB from your 2023 summer internship.
TLDR - take the ops offer (actually focusing on converting that first rather than thinking about IB), renege if you get IB or if you dont then do the summer and re-recruit again for summer 2023
