Opportunities in Florida, Rising Junior.

Not really industry-specific so going to put it here. Just wanted to get an idea what kind of 'options' there are in South Florida, and which finance industries/careers dominate the area. I'm a rising Junior and looking to make the move particularly in wealth/asset management. Some internships are opening up but I'll most likely network on my own since I'm out of state with no meaningful proximity.

Hey man, From Florida so I can give some insights. There are some larger banks that have a PWM type office in south Florida (UBS/JPM/GS). WF has MM banking office in South Florida. There are a few notable Real estate groups (Starwood) in the Miami area. BAML has a huge office in Miami (I’ve seen it) but I actually don’t know what roles are there. Raymond James is in Tampa and that’s your best bet for your traditional high finance roles. Citi has BO/MO type work in Tampa. Jacksonville has a lot of BO/MO arms of other regional banks/groups (BAML/USBank/Macquarie,etc) .There are a lot of boutique investment banks/private equity servicing middle markets but breaking in is going to be near impossible as basically you have to have solid connections to get in (read family/friends). I’ll be honest it’s going to be difficult to get past the UF/USF/UCF/UMiamj grads who want to stay in south Florida (believe it or not a lot do) and are already well connected. And if you aren’t proficient in Spanish, you’re probably not getting hired in Miami truth be told. My advice is to do some research and find banks that have a presence in Florida and where you currently are. Focus on getting an offer close to where you are regionally and then transfer in. Also be flexible with coming into Jacksonville first (even though it’s not south Florida) as there’s a decent finance scene there too (and a good beach). Feel free to ask more questions.

Solid info, I think this just about answers what I was looking for. PWM is what I'm going for, I mean they're your basic regional offices in my area just not sure how those roles are transferrable to the bigger houses in Florida.
