OPT delays - 3 to 8 months processing times?!

Hey all,

I am scheduled to start at one of the top BBs (GS/MS) this summer as a FT IB analyst.
I have sent in my OPT application, but the wait times have just skyrocketed to 3-8 months from the typical 1.5-4 months. This means there is a chance I will not get my OPT authorization by the time I am expected to commence employment at the bank.

Does anyone know what happens in instances like this one? Would my bank even attempt to transfer me to an office abroad if I don't get the authorization on time? Or would I just lose my offer?...

Thanks WSO!

I have the same exact problem as you do.

The immigration office of my school mentioned that delays in your OPT authorization happen every year and employers that have experience with H-1B sponsorships are very flexible.

The most likely scenario is that you are going to receive your OPT authorization on time given that the application window was opened 3 days ago.

The second most likely scenario is that you will stay in the US but without starting work until you receive the authorization. In order to prepare for this scenario, it would be good to be prepared financially for a few months of no work.

I don't see in any scenario that your bank rescinds the offer. Honestly, don't even think of this possibility.

Hang in there, many of us are in the same boat. Knowing all the parameters and appropriate risk management is the only thing that you can do right now.

Why do you need to stay in States, freshman international student here? and were you allowed to apply to OPT just now? also, will you try the lottery this year as well?

Because if you leave the states you will lose your status since you’re technically out of the school already but without the proper approval to work (OPT).

In regards to OP: I wouldn’t worry too much about it. Worst case scenario you will have to wait a few more weeks to get it. Your bank has experience dealing with this and will understand. I work in one of those banks you mentioned and had to miss 1.5 weeks of my summer training due to OPT being delayed.
