Optiver Trading
Does anyone know about Optiver?
They're a derivatives market maker in Chicago with an international reach, but what are the opinions of starting a career here?
It's good that you're hired as a trader, but is the turnover high?
How is it compared to other prop trading firms?
Dunno about pay comparisons to other prop trading firms, but you get paid higher than BB traders. Higher base, and higher bonus potential.
Hey I've heard of optiver, heard they have desks in amsterdam (orginate from here?) and sydney
I've friends who went for interviews and I heard its challenging (like any trading interviews i guess) and the pay is respectable.. dont really know whats ur expectations but I reckon the pay might be ard 80k (that was the offer in Sydney)
not too sure about career prospects but i guess if you make loads of money, everyone will want to hire you
"It's good that you're hired as a trader, but is the turnover high?"
At most prop shops turnover is slightly higher than you'd expect, just because they generally are much more lean than BB equivalents. Moreover, it's more of an eat what you kill type environment. It's not uncommon for people to be let go in their first month at some places, but that said, Optiver in Chicago has recently had a great track record. Based off their last couple recruiting cycles (done multiple times a year), the majority of traders are still there.
There is a degree of self-selection, so just because they've had low turnover recently doesn't mean that if you work there, you have a great deal of job security. If they don't think you can hack it, or you don't do well on the exams/classes, you'll be bounced.
"How is it compared to other prop trading firms?"
People always ask this question on this forum and I think frankly that's a difficult question to answer. Prop shops aren't like BB's, where the strength and reputation of their platform is driving their business. There are no clients, so to speak in prop shops, so their top priority is making money. Accordingly, the amount of marketing and generalizing how good a firm is is a LOT less significant. When you're trading, you aren't competing against your peers at your prop shop, but rather every other trader in the world in your space/product. You could be the best trader at your firm, and the worst oil trader in the world, or the second best trader at your firm, and the best trader in the world for what you do.
So overall it's hard to ask how it compares. I can say that their environment isn't unbearable, and generally it's a laid back group of people. Pay is great (as in upper management don't take most of what you make, like the larger trading shops like SIG), and the non-compete is fortunately not as completely debilitating as other places.
Working at a trading shop is all about fit. People generally say good things about Optiver in the Chicago trading world. It's a reputable prop shop who is often mentioned when talking about other heavy hitters - Citadel, DRW, IMC, and Spot. Again though, reputation really means shit, because at the end of the day, it's gonna come down to how smart you are. The majority of prop shops talked about on these forums will give you equivalent tools to trade. It's going to come down to how smart you are.

My friend was recently offered a market maker position for optiver. It is a dutch proprietary trading company, focused on arbitrage. According to some research that I have done, it is a serious company with good prospects.
My friend might get an offer for a trader position in BB, so he wants to be aware of the up and down sides for both. any insights?
Yes, a good friend of mine is with them. from what i know, you better be prepared to move to Amsterdam. The pay isn't very good at all when they're just training you, but if you can stomach the risk of losing your job more easily than at an ibank, you can make some fast money there.
i think the way they weed out candidates (through quick mental math problems) is pretty stupid tho
Thanks for your comment. He was offered a position in the chicago office though. Apparently, there will be a 3 months training in Amsterdam and then he will be moved to chicago. Could you introduce me to your friend that works there by any chance?
hello ________ this is my friend from the internet, hes cool though.
it's very funny that everybody in here says "my friend bla bla bla.." as if it's not obvious you talk about yourself...internet is free for everyone, so if it were for your friend you could just have recommended him a subscription in the forum... anyway....
Could you introduce me to your friend that works there by any chance?...----->This is SCREAMING ....
are ver very hard (I failed by a couple of points) it's something like 90 questions in 10 minutes all of which are multiple choice - things like what is 0.4473 * .0474726 - no calculator and any working on the paper is an automatic fail.
