Overpaying Taxes
I just read this piece in The Economist and I have to say ingenuity is a bitch.
Why Swedes overpay their taxes
The TLDR version is Sweeds overpay because of 0% or negative interest rates, and it helps to carry a balance with the government rather than keep money in a bank. It would be an interesting day when this happens in the United States. It looks like things are turning around and starting to go the other way here.
That sounds like the sort of problem a government in southern Europe would be delighted to have. In Sweden, however, officials may ask taxpayers to cool it and please pay a bit less.
How does a country dig itself out of this type of hole? More spending?
