Overreaching with applications

I've come across positions advertised at two separate consulting firms that might be a reach for me to apply to, but it's a borderline situation that could go either way. Normally, I would apply in a heartbeat and hope for the best, but I've heard way too much talk about lockout periods for me to take this lightly.

Is it a good idea to apply to positions quite ambitiously or would I be better off waiting for the job that I know I qualify for to come around?

Unless you provide more detail on the situation, all I can recommend is to apply to everything under the sun. However, unless you have a contact on the inside, these online apps are a like a black hole (can say from experience).

What could be the worst if you do apply and do not get a call back? So long it doesn't hurt your chance for applying a "more qualified" position in the same firm, I didn't see why you should not give it a shot.

Yeah I'd want more details too. Some big firms (MBB) have a lockout, but they also don't really offer you choices as to what position is appropriate for you (besides research, but that's less of a reach than AC/BA).

One of those lights, slightly brighter than the rest, will be my wingtip passing over.
