you're not funny.
I'm in tears! this was good.
It's okay to own a Swatch
caring this much about watches makes you about as intelligent as those birds that collect pieces of tin foil (aluminum for all you yanks) to attract a mate.
Says the one asking which WSO monkey ranks are prestigious ?!
satire
you need to change your name
A. Lange & Sohne or FP Journe are far better in the same price range imo. I've owned all the aforementioned brands and was not impressed by my AP ROs level of finishing. The patek was nice but not amazing.
FP doesn't nearly have as much history as the other names.
Who cares? Do you also buy your cars that way?
"my Ford has so much history though"
I don't, but some people do care about that, especially when they buy watches to sell them after few years etc.
I buy/sell fairly often and it's really not an issue if you buy used in the first place. Plus the FPJ CB for example has gone up over 2x what it sells for list. I know that's an outlier but it's really not a good reason to avoid some amazing examples of high horology!
Agreed that it doens't apply to them but it would or may for watches that are in a lower price range. I think that FP Journe is a good buy for multiple reasons - if you want to potentially resell: - they manufacture very few watches a year (less than 1k I believe) - they are the only brand that can re-service watches and give a warranty for a used watch - Growing name and unique designs (its big/small hands are just unique)
The CB is an outlier. Look at the other FP Journe watches, they don’t do well in the secondary market (although not very different than other brands, but I would say on average worse than PP). Don’t get me wrong, I love FP Journe watches (huge fan of the Octa Quantième Perpétuel), but using the CB as an example is cherry picking.
I do agree that ALS watches are amazing. But if you want to get into really limited productions, one of my favorites is kari voutilainen, his watches aren’t for everyone, but I definitely enjoy them. Will take about 1-3 years to get one though (and they’ll be expensive)
Yeah his work is amazing. Re: FPJ value/ALS etc... I think the key is just buying used in the first place.
your girlfriend definitely has history, yet you still drop thousands on her. what’s your point.
Thoughts for the plebs looking to dip their toes into watches for decent automatics at cheaper prices ($1k-$2k)? In-house movement only like Seiko? Hamilton? Nothing and save up for later?
Baume and Mercier Classima is a good basic, not their own movement until you go to the Baumatic range I believe.
Some people hate on Frederique Constant but they make their in-house movements for very affordable prices and have watches with some cool stuff (moonphase available from ~2k here yet prefer this one that is more expensive)
This guy knows what he's talking about.
H Moser also makes a fantastically innovative perpetual calendar that can be picked up for under 25k USD.
More of a Vacheron Constantin guy.
For me, it’s Patek, then Vacheron Constantin, then AP.
Patek Philippe is what rolex is to blue colar workers but for the elite - has always been leading watch making innovation
Vacheron Constantin very refined traditional swiss watches, yet doesn't carry as good of a name as Patek
Audemars Piguet made it to the big names and is more recognised due to its Royal Oak but because of that has lost its traditional image
A. Lange & Sohne are great German watches, not quite swiss yet though
The Germans have been making watches longer than the Swiss, so not sure what 'not quite Swiss' is supposed to mean. ALS at least finishes the movements on all their watches to a high standard, unlike PP which definitely scales their effort back for the cheaper models.
If you want a solid diver and are tired of Subs, AP isn't bad. If you want a complex movement that'll work for decades go with PP. Like many comments on this thread, there are excellent brands in AP's and PP's price range but for some people branding may matter. Between the two brands themselves, I would by the Nautilus over the RO but the ROO over the Aquanaut. For everything else, PP. AP is trying to diversity a bit and make classic looking watches but I predict they'll either be a flop or for die hard AP fans. Even for their super simple Jules Audemars models, who wouldn't consider a Lange Saxonia first?
Big fan of Roger Dubuis and MB&F personally.
Can we take a moment to appreciate how sick this is:
