Path for a non-core position in big AM firm

Recently started a job in a non-core business function (communication/business development) in a top AM firm. Did not like the current role but took the job for the company name/location. (bad luck in landing full-time offer when was an undergrad). Always know wanted to jump to core business function (product development, portfolio management, sales). Not sure what is the best way and how/when.
Studied econ as an undergrad so have the basic quant skills, afraid if stay in non-core business too long people will doubt my ability to do other jobs.

Current thought:
Stay at the position for 1-1.5 year and take CFA, try to internal transfer to core business function or jump to another firm. (but wondered how hard is it to make the jump and what should be my backup plan...but do not want to be stuck in the current position for long)
