Patrick Mahomes historic $0.5B deal

Is Patrick Mahomes' $500 million contract actually team-friendly? Answering eight questions on the Chiefs QB's deal

Chiefs lock up Patrick Mahomes through 2031 with massive extension

I've been a Chiefs fan since 2016, when I saw Tyreek Hill pull off a 95 yard punt return touchdown (and he continued to pull off 70+ yard punt return touchdowns more than I can count). During the 2020 playoffs, I can't tell how many times I thought the Chiefs were gonna lose. But Mahomes and the Chiefs always pulled it off, crunching 2~4 touchdowns in a single quarter multiple games. Made me a true believer in Mahomes magic.

I'm glad that the Chiefs locked up Mahomes with this contract. They're pretty much paying him $45Mil/year for 10 years + other benefits that makes the deal worth a whopping half a billion dollars.

But questions remain: Is he really worth that much? Is he actually gonna stay with the Chiefs for 10 years? Can Mahomes continue to have his magic touch? Idk enough about the inner workings of NFL to answer those questions. Would love to hear some thoughts.

That is some serious money. Still, Patrick Mahomes is a serious quarterback.

He threw for over 5,000 his first full year and won the MVP award. The year after? He won the Super Bowl. He is an absurd athlete and is crazy young. He was born in 1995 - I remember 1995. Not only that, but he's quickly becoming a "face of the NFL" level star on top of his athletic abilities and team accomplishments.

With how the modern NFL protects quarterbacks, the Chiefs were damn smart to lock that man down for a decade.

Frankly I wonder how close he is going to get to a billion, or if it is really just a matter of when. Between interest, investments, and all of his current and future endorsements - why not?

MVP and Super Bowl Champ in his first three years plus all of the marketability you mentioned? Mahomes could be Adidas' answer to Air Jordan in the US.

It's a great example of a scenario where the valuation just doesn't matter - It's a 1 of 1 type issue. You can't write a check to replace him if you wanted to. Jerry Jones would have already if he could. It's everything you could ask for - generation player who's proven successful (MVP and superbowl), great head coach, great talent around him, two more years with no cap issues to invest in talent around Mahomes - you do this every time. Every. Single. Time.
