PE Recruiting: Deciding what firm is the best fit

Hey everyone,

As PE recruiting chugs along, I was wondering how you decided what firm was right for you. I know that it can be extremely beneficial to go into HH talks and the PE interviews themselves with a clear, concise, and confident answer for why this firm / space.

I am kind of struggling to differentiate certain firms and what I ultimately want. I realize this is based on personal preferences and goals, but what were the main qualities you assessed when recruiting? I understand that location, size, culture, investment style, etc. are the main factors, but what did you put the most weight on, and how did you come to a conclusion? (e.g., how did you truly know working with lower MM companies, in NYC, at this exact fund was the right fit).

No right answer to this question, just interested to hear people's thought processes.

A more specific follow-up question. Are there opportunities in PE whereby you can participate in various facets of the traditional PE deal cycle and the operations of a portfolio company? I understand the "operations myth" of PE, and that most of this will revolve around bolt-ons and occasionally helping with budgeting / occasional capex spend.

What PE firms are more "hands-on", and would give a junior team member a broader learning experience? (even if this is de minimis)
