Pension Fund / SWFs

Hi all,

Does anyone have any information on the direct private equity groups of pension funds / SWFs? Seems like these guys are hiring more and more and are on some really interesting deals.

Obviously you have your GICs and Temasek, but also CPPIB, CDPQ, OTPP, BCI, PSP etc.

On these large deals are they actually quite involved or are they just there as a coin vest or and likely to have much less involvement?

What is the pay like? Obviously you aren’t going to get your traditional carry at these places. Is its a bit reduced in order to get a better WL balance?

Interested primarily in London but other locations too.

Many thx

I posted something similar on another thread. I know of the HF side and less of the PE.

On the HF side these funds are obviously actively managing money and acting as any other HF, except with different time horizons, risk profiles, etc. The little I’ve heard from friends on the PE side the more sophisticated places are active and not just co-investing. Keep in mind that many PFs are not as sophisticated as your GIC, CPPIB, etc.

The pay is less but solid. Again posted this on another thread but MDs (the top ones) at the top places are around $1mm, most will be in the $600-700k range. There isn’t carry, but I know at least a few that, as part of your comp, take a % (can be large) of your salary and invest that in their funds. That can add up.
