Personal Values
I've been reading Stephen Covey's 7 Habits.
If you haven't read the book, one of the principles he talks about is that we all operate from a kind of "personal center" that influences all of our actions. Popular personal centers are money, significant others, family, alcohol, fame, etc. He argues that we can only be personally successful and fulfilled if we place a set of timeless values at our center, i.e. Truth, Love, Loyalty, Justice, and that these values can more clearly guide our choices. The choices we make from these are supposed to lead us to more success and will result in our external worlds aligning with our internal life.
I wondered what y'all's opinion is of this, and if you agree, what set of values you try to live by. Which ones serve you well? I'm trying to get together a list of my own that can justify destruction of the enemy and getting really rich and successul and also remind me that family is important and I should try not to fuck my kids up mentally or divorce my future wife for jailbait. Maybe these two paths are mutually exclusive, but that's a depressing thought that I probably won't accept until it's too late.
