Ph.D in Accounting or Getting Accepting into Top 5 MBA

Hi All,

Accounting student preparing for the future 5-10 years from now. I think public accounting is great but I don't think I could stomach it for long so thinking of a strategy.

What would be more challenging, getting into a good Ph.D program or into a top 5 MBA program?

If you have the math and stats background, then you will be good to go. After speaking with some tenured or tenure track professors, I found that the skill sets of practitioners and professors have very little overlap.

Accounting PhD here. It depends on your goals. As was posted before, most accounting phds end up being professors, however more go into industry than seems to be recognized on this board. However if your plan was to go into industry you would be far better off NPV wise doing the top 5 MBA. The only exception is if you wish to study the use of accounting information to generate alpha. In this case a PHD might be advisable, and there are several accounting professors / phds that go on to work in hedge funds or as consultants to hedge funds specializing in this.
