You mean actual work, or zoning out in your cubicle until you finally get a project at 5pm? Actually getting meaningful, productive work done the entire time... for me, only 1 day.
According to Malcolm Gladwell
After 10,000 hours you'll not need to work mad hours to get the job done seamlessly.
So at 18 hours a day, that's 556 days or 18 months.
But Let's get real: You won't last more than 3-5 days
Gladwell was speaking of deliberate practice, which he argues one cannot do for more than 2-3hrs at a time
Honestly, being in the deliberate practice mindset for 18hrs a day will probably mentally exhaust you for the next few days
Good point!
You can do 18 hours a day ad infinitum, but your performance does take a hit.
However, everyone else is operating at the same deficit. Also, as they say, banking isn't rocket science.
I think this might be how they justify recruiting top students to do a job that requires unflinching obedience at the lower levels and people skills at the top: those students will still be "smart enough" when running around half-drunk on sleep deprivation.
Not to veer off-topic but this is what is funny about IB. I guarantee you the guy who is in S&T in a relatively liquid product is going to be way more drained after a 7AM-6PM day than the IB analyst who did some PPT slides, adjusted a few assumptions in a model, sat around for 5 hours doing nothing before getting comments at 9pm. So "working" is a very subjective word in IB.
All depends on how much coffee and adderall you're taking, as well as how well you're prepared for it mentally. That being said, your work product will probably suffer immediately. If I work 17-18 hours per day then my work product is down to 80-90% by Wednesday night and garbage by the end of the week.
Physical endurance of young bankers and aspiring bankers... (Originally Posted: 09/27/2010)
I have seen so many posts being put up, but couldn't find much when i searched for physical fitness and workout suggestions. Everyone talks about making big bucks, aspiring to be a billionaire, working long hours, drinking after work/every weekend and the stress in the finance world. How come there is no mention of keeping yourself fit to not just survive the stress, but also live healthy???
Even though, I had been very particular about exercising at gym, doing yoga and getting personal training, but over the past couple of years the workout routine has taken a second stand because of studies and work. As a result of my sedentary lifestyle, I can feel my neck getting tensed and other related on and off issues.
So, here is my open question to everyone here...
What is your fitness regime and how do you keep up?
Thanks.
just go to gym for 30 min and run chubalug
I have found it very difficult to stay in shape over the years. As a sophomore in college I was in great shape, had a six-pack, looked good, etc. Since then it has been downhill. Sitting in front of a computer all day every day, with nothing to do other than work and eat, makes it nearly impossible to stay in shape. At this point, I have given up on being in "great shape" and am just trying to maintain a reasonable weight and not become "fat".
To do so I try and get to the gym either before or after work 3/4 days per week for 20-30 min on the elliptical or treadmill, with a weight routine thrown in every once in a while. I moved into a place with a decent gym in the building, and that has definitely helped. A lot of people also try and sneak out of work for an hour or so during the day... I unfortunately don't have that option.
cocaine
my hours aren't quite as bad as a typical banker, as I'm in China and things are a little softer over here, but they're still pretty killer. What I've done is bought a stationary bike in my apartment, as well as a yoga mat. As discussed above, you can forget about staying in ripped/pimpass condition working these kinds of hours, but you can still look and feel healthy. I wake up each morning and get on the bike for 25 minutes and do a few sets of crunches/pushups (bateman style) before I take a shower. I also use this time to watch CNBC and get a nice little update on what happened in US markets over night. Not only does this keep you from getting fat, but working out in the morning gives you more energy throughout the day. (note - drink your coffee AFTER the workout if you're capable of waiting that long)
This method may not be possible for some... I don't get till the office until 9 and it's only 20 minutes away, so I can wake up at 7:15-7:30 and do this... since I'm typically home by midnight its very possible... I know some peoples hours are a LOT worse.
another thing I do is set a program on my computer that reminds me to close my eyes for 15 second and stretch every 2 hours... it seems like you do that anyways, but sometimes you do actually sit for 3-4 hours without moving and that's very bad for your neck.
I find that eliminating a meal and essentially starving yourself does wonders for your waste line. I didn't eat a thing until 4pm today and even then it was only a nutragrain bar and some tea.
I've always heard this has the opposite effect, i.e. slows down your metabolism. To lose weight, I thought it was best to eat regularly and frequently, but to eat small meals.
anthony becareful with that shit you might pass out make sure you drink water/pop lol
I don't know, I have always been able to go long periods without eating. I am a human camel, but with food lol.
Ivy, whose face is that on the ninja turtle body?
I skip breakfast and lunch almost every weekday. Works wonders...
lol its a squirtle (Pokemon), not a ninja turtle.
6 ' 3 ~ 245 lbs bench : 225 x 20 Squat : 400 x 8 40 yard dash : hmmmm....(working on it) former college tight end
love that feelin when I enter the room and im the biggest mofo on table standing among short fat bald jews
lol that is a creepy ass icon
but to stay in shape...i just try real hard to not give in to crappy seamless dinners and force myself to go to the gym. then, i do a hybrid of strength and circuit training
I run 3miles (0.2mi short of a 5k) 4-5times a week in the mornings, followed by 3x3 sets in the weight room of my apartment. Then again, I don't work banking hours.
That actually is counterproductive. You're metabolism slows down, and you go into starvation mode. So the next time you eat, a higher % of what you eat will be converted to fat b/c your body anticipates further periods of starvation.
what they're saying is to split your nutragrain bar into 4-6 little nutragrain nuggets a day.
This is such a piece of over hyped BS. Losing and gaining weight depends entirely on two things: the amount of calories you consume and the amount of calories you burn. That's not to say that it isn't true...it is just way over hyped. You can't store 1,000 calories if you only ate 1,000 and your body has burned 2,000.
Don't get me wrong, the small meals spaced out over time is a good way to get your diet (read: food consumption) under control but it often is a result of making better food choices, not some super metabolism boost. Most people don't swing by McDonald's and buy a value meal, then divide the fries in half and chop the Big Mac in two so they can eat the second half in an hour or so...they usually just eat a smaller and generally more healthy meal, then supplement that with things that would be considered better choices than fries, etc.
Case in point, I used to be in exceptional shape and worked out twice a day 4 days a week (Mon-Thur) and then just once on Friday. In the morning I would do cardio/circuit training and then in the evening I would spend about an hour lifting weights (fast, heavy and hard) and then about another hour or so doing straight cardio until I burned 1,000+ calories on the stair climber. Typically I would eat a couple spoonfuls of PB before I left for the gym, to hold me over, and a protein shake when I got home but I was always hungry leaving the gym because it was dinner time. I would always want to grab something based on taste and could justify that I "deserved" it because I just worked out so hard, but I would always end up grabbing a sub instead of a burger because I didn't want to undue of all the work I just. Granted that is my personality and others will be different, but I guess I figure if you are going to do something, then go all out. Obviously the flip side is that when I wasn't able to go to the gym all the time, I stopped working out entirely because I wasn't committed and didn't want to half ass it. Now, I've gained a good amount of weight and have decided that I just need to commit to going when I have the chance and that everything counts, regardless of how little...so I take the stairs when I can and make better food choices. Now I just need to get back into the gym as often as I can swing it to help get me back on track.
At any rate, check out the P90X series if you have the coin. You can buy some free weights and do the workouts in your apartment...I believe they are all under an hour. I have a handful of friends that did it and each of them lost a significant amount of weight...some of which didn't even appear to have a significant amount of weight to lose.
You can also try Insanity, which is similar to P90X, but you don't need any weights. I just got that and will be starting it soon so I should be able to update you guys as to how it is. I have skimmed through the videos and it is definitely intense and reminds me a lot of some of the stuff I did when I lead the pt training we did in the Army but Lord knows I am no where near the level of conditioning that I was when I was in...so wish me luck, lol.
Regards
It's ok to starve yourself occasionally. No study has ever shown that 5-6 meals per day is any better than 1,2,3, or 4 in terms of elevating metabolism significantly (maybe an extra 5-10 calories per day). Fasting for a long period actually raises HGH levels in your body, leading to an increase in the amount of fat your body uses for energy.
As hard as it is, I make it a habit to go to the gym EVERYDAY afterwork. This means that sometimes I'm there at 2 am, other times at midnight, and if I'm lucky, I'm there at 8.
Also, agree with Anthony above...try to eat healthy while you're at the office / don't eat much / don't eat at all. I've also found that if I go home before heading to the gym from work, I won't go at all. I make it a point to go DIRECTLY from work to the gym every night.
I ate 2 slices of pizza at 9pm last night. It is 11:34 right now and I have not consumed an ounce of food. I will update throughout the day to see how long I can go. Right now I am not the least bit hungry, just want some tea or something like orange juice.
Your stomach expands and contracts. You starve yourself for a week or so and you will lose inches off your stomach. Then when you eat again you will get full faster and consume less.
My metabolism might go ice age, but I still run around like a kid on crack. Guess I am just hyper.
I want to see how long you can go...but you can't use cocaine, that's cheating!
Don't make me thunder you.
lol I am starving myself, not trying to kill myself haha.
I will probably consume something in a couple hours. I have an interview and don't need to be spacey.
Can we get a thread called, "The Anthony Diet: The Adventures of Nutragrain Bars and Tea" or something...
I am eating right now. Berry smoothie with 2% milk. That should tide me over until 8pm tonight.
When I was at HSBC I used to eat the following :
1) 1 Protein Bar 2) 1 Banana 3) 4 Hard Boiled Eggs 4) Lots of water
I about died by the end of the week haha.
Daily? Weekly?
Have fun at the interview. Glad you ate something because it would put a damper on the whole thing if you passed out in the middle of it, lol.
Regards
hahaha was that shrink wrapped in the cafeteria? Or did you just tell the nice lady in the hair net that you wanted the "Tony Special"
Great post cph but I prefer Insanity since you dont need the weights and all that so when I have to travel, I don't have to change my routine/bring dumbbells (haha)
I loaded it on my phone since doing it in my condo isn't going to work...so I will just take it down to the gym we have in the building and set it up there, or maybe even out in the courtyard since the weather is cooling down. I have P90X too, a buddy gave it too me, but I never started it because I gave all my free weights away a while back and hadn't bought new ones.
Regards
Constantly morphing over there Ivy?
That was my daily intake. So far I have only at the smoothie and 2 peppermint hard candies. Interview went well. I know everyone there so it was more just catching up than anything. I think they will go with someone else since the position is more suited for a well experience candidate. With that said it was still nice to see everyone and catch up.
Lesson to all the monkey's: Never burn bridges.
Minus those few MD's you mentioned in a recent post right Anthony? Just giving you a hard time...
Hahaha, yeah, I never said imitate me, learn from me haha.
