Platts/Bentek for starting energy career
Hey just wondering what the energy people on here think of starting at a company like Bentek or Platts right out of undergrad as an energy analyst. Looks like it would be either crude, ngls, or nat gas physical market research for their published reports and client-specific requests.
If I started here would I be stuck in market analysis for good? Unable to move to trading without the mid/back office operations experience that someone could get in a trader development plan?
For personal reasons I'm trying to stay in the Denver area so that keeps me from considering new grad programs at BP, Shell, P66, etc. So, unfortunately, it looks like small energy companies, energy consulting, or research at Bentek/Platts are pretty much my only options.
Thanks for all the help.

Decent fundamentals, good location. Be prepared to be paid min wage for long work weeks. You could then go work for some shop in analytics and maybe move into trading from there, but none of those opportunities are in Denver.
It's a great job, until you want to make more than $50k/yr.
Great thanks for the advice. I definitely wasn't aware of the pay there (that sucks) but it's good to know it's a reasonable path to something that'd be better.
If anyone has advice for starting an energy career in Denver in general too I'd appreciate the help. Specifically, what companies would be good for training/learning initially?
Thanks!
What kind of jobs are you looking for? Noble, Williams/WPX, Anadarko, MarkWest Energy, and Encana all have large presences or are HQ'd in Denver
Right now I'm pretty open to different roles as long as they're interesting and the experience is valuable. I have limited experience in inventory analysis, scheduling, and risk anlaysis. I like the commercial/supply/logistics side of the business and am looking in that space. From what I can tell Anadarko and Noble in Denver are mostly land offices, but you're definitely right about Markwest, Williams, and Encana being good options. Thanks for the list CaR! Also, I recently found out that Genscape has a Colorado office. If anyone knows anything about what's going on there (is it only nat gas analytics?) that'd be awesome.
