Political Science Major with hopes of Becoming Trader
Hey, everyone. To make a long story short, I am a Political Science major that is about to graduate from university. I have an Economics and History minor for what it's worth.
I'm looking to to try to get into the world of trading and investing, but I know it will be difficult. The trading world is hard enough as it is, but I know that I will face some degree of skepticism due to my non-finance, non-business background. I have had two internships, but both were much more about public policy and government.
I have a 3.7 GPA, good analytical skills, am a good critical thinker, and am relatively articulate. Regarding investing, I have the most experience with Forex but even then, I am limited.
I was wondering what people might think is a good first step in trying to enter the world of trading. From the answers I have received from alumni from my school, an entry level, mid-office operations role is a good thing to shoot for. I have been told by others to simply take a run at getting a position in the front office, whether as a trading assistant, or a junior trader. This would be done at an investment bank or prop firm. I have also been advised that it would not be a bad idea to try to get an internship, though I am a bit more reluctant on that front because after four years of school, like anyone, I want to at least start getting a paycheck.
I know that I should start reading the news even more frequently than I do. I have also been told to follow the markets more, read the top selling Wall Street books, and while searching for a job, try to immerse myself in the subject matter.
Beyond that, what do you folks recommend? Thanks for your insights.
