Possible avenues in asset management
I've been working in a sort of equity sales role for the past few years (a hybrid between sales and research marketing). My days are filled with writing lengthy sales commentary to string together + supplement research views into a narrative targeted at particular groups of clients. A very senior person at one of the big asset management firms has always been friendly towards me, and when I bumped into him recently and mentioned work frustrations, he said that we should definitely meet after his holiday as he has a good opportunity for me. Thinking back on past conversations, he once also mentioned "you belong in Asset Management". I have no buy-side experience and haven't worked as an analyst (frankly speaking, my finance education and even excel skills have been fading from memory in my current job) so I'm wondering what this might be. I'm also wondering why he has seemed so eager to hire me, as I don't think I've demonstrated brilliance in my few interactions with him. The only thing that comes to mind is that I've organised several CEO roadshow events and he might believe that I am very well connected? I also moderated a couple sessions once at a conference that he attended. This guy is a former PM, now titled as a strategist with responsibilities for business development. If I were to go into asset management, I would want to have real advancement potential and not be in some marginal role (miscellaneous marketing/business development or the guy who writes the quarterly newsletter). Any ideas? Since this guy is so friendly towards me, I'd like to be able to pitch a role that works for both sides.
