Post-MBA Options for Product Managers with Tech Backgrounds
Hi all,
New to this forum. I am currently a junior at a top 20 university double majoring in computer science and philosophy. I will be working in the technology division of a bulge bracket bank this summer as a product manager, meaning that I assess data on how users are interacting with our technologies in order to guide development going forward. Prior to this year, I was actually unaware of high finance as a career path, but as I have learned more about it I realize that it is something I would like to move into in the future. However, thus far in my time as a student I have tailored my resume and work experience entirely towards the tech industry, and I figure it is too late in the networking/work experience game to transition into finance right out of undergrad. I'm thinking my best move will instead be to either stick with the bank I'll be working at if I get a return offer or to apply for product manager roles at a top tech company like Google or Facebook, and then apply to top MBA programs. However, I've heard that without pre-MBA banking experience, it is extremely difficult to break into the most lucrative high-finance careers such as those in private equity. Would it be more possible for me to go from Product Manager to MBA to 2 years at an investment bank post-MBA to private equity? I'm new to the world of high finance, and would appreciate insights on what will be possible for me with a background in tech and product management if I go to a top MBA program.
Thanks.
