Read an accounting textbook first. I personally really liked "How to Read a Financial Report" by Tracy & Tracy, but there are lots of good ones out there. Having a good understanding of accounting will 1) make R&P way easier to understand and 2) allow you to apply the concepts from R&P to other models and other companies.
thanks, would you also recommend that i read a corporate finance textbook too or is that unecesaey after i learn accounting?
corporate finance - Jonathan B. Berk, Peter M. DeMarzo -my personal favorite
Lot's of free accounting resources online too, like learnaccountingforfree.com.
Prerequisites for Investment banking (Rosenbaum&Pearl) (Originally Posted: 10/28/2017)
Initially I started reading through the BIWS technical guides on accounting and valuation. As for accounting, the amount of information in BIWS seems to be enough just to understand the basics and answer most of the questions during the interview. When it comes to corporate finance and valuation, I'm not so sure. I believe these guides are not aimed at teaching you. I was also thinking of reading the highly recommended Investment Banking by Rosenbaum and Pearl. Question is, what are the prerequisites for understanding everything in this book or any others on valuation and advanced corporate finance?
Probably, Principles of corporate finance by Brealey and Myers? I might be wrong here, but the principles seems a bit verbose and it could be easily reduced by half. Are there any more "dry" texts on corporate finance that cover all the necessary foundations?

I will receive this fabulous book tomorrow and have an interview in a month approx.
Are there any prerequisites to starting this book?
Also, in how many days/weeks can the concepts in the book be mastered?
Prerequistes to reading this book could be like knowing the basics of financial reporting, corporate finance, valuation, etc or would you say the book for absolute beginners?
Appreciate your advice, Primates, and greetings for a rocking new year!
For accounting, apart from investopedia, I was considering buying 'introduction to accounting for finance' by adkins matchette and toy. Any advice on that front or any other book to master accounting?
You could easily get through it in a week. The book is great.
Just to let you know, though, Rosenbaum and Pearl can be a little dense at times. I think I remember it walking through the filings for an IPO, for example. No interviewer is going to ask you some of that, so make sure you nail the concepts rather than the parts of an s-1 filing.
