very different strategy from blackstone - more distressed situations, much smaller check sizes. strategy more aligns with fortress, cerberus, oaktree. but very well regarded - i recall some other guys here having dealt with them in the past and being impressed. also currently in the process of trying to raise $2.7B i believe
Good rep/returns; REPE team seems good but with poor upper management which seemed to care about building prestige over hiring right, i.e. cared more about where you went to school, gpa, and previous experiences, over some of the qualities which we can all agree on are more valuable/important at the analyst level (motivation, culture fit, everything else except gpa...)
Sounds like you’re making assumptions about why they passed on you as a candidate for a job
I wish the reason they had passed on me was because i didn't have the necessary skills for the role...
I've worked with a few of their alumni and we have invested in a few deals alongside them. They have a great feel for the market, are definitely smart and sophisticated investors and they have a lot of capital to deploy. Overall, they would appear to be a great shop from an outsiders perspective.
We’ve engaged with them as firm to co-invest as they have a lot of capital to deploy. However, we believe they aren’t as smart as they think they are.
I've found that most people aren't as smart as they think they are.
I mean that's certainly true, but we felt they were arrogant
Second this. Arrogant is an understatement. Have met very few people who match their level of hubris despite being generally unimpressive.
This is incorrect it’s mostly out of shape fuckin nerds and losers who think they’re hot shit for being at Angelo Gordon. Truly the worst type of people.
They're okay. Nothing amazing, yet nothing terrible.

Solid reputation and considered to be very prudent, conservative investors. Also, very low turnover-it seems that most of the investment team has been there for a while.
Anyone have a sense for their funds' returns over time? RE not PE
They're a top dog. Up there with the AEWs & OakTrees of the world.
They tend to have a very flexible/strategic investment process, oriented towards special situations or unique capital structures. They don't just shotgun JV Equity slugs at anything in a decent market such as Carlyle.
nothing against them, they've been around for forever and are reputable, but i've never heard anyone refer to AEW as "top dog"
I guarantee you Senior Associates / VPs at AEW are getting paid better than your Senior Associates & VPs. Their Analysts are a caliber above you I am sure, better paid as wells.
When i think of AEW I think of extremely average, borderline subpar. So this definitely isn’t a glowing review if that’s your benchmark.
Oh interesting the incoming analyst who doesn't know shit about fuck has a wrong opinion. Guarantee whatever dog ass shop you're coming into pays less than the Analysts at AEW. Their analysts are prolly a good bit quicker too, this I am sure of
Solid shop, but not really close to Blackstone at all (although no one really is)
