Prioritizing and Getting Sh*t Done
Curious to see what everyone's workflow style is. Do you try and knock out everything you can as soon as it comes across your desk? Do you spread things out evenly across the day/week? How often do you stop grinding to take a break? Any feedback or advice is greatly appreciated.
Used to knock things out as they came but it means 0 planning, often poor quality work and rushing. I ask for deadlines with each piece of work and spend 1-2 mins assessing where in my daily/weekly/monthly work plan that task comes in. Plus, as you go along in your firm you learn who the scary people are and learn to do shit for them first. Deadline can at times be flexible (depending on senior). Tolerance for shit work isn't.
You don't think you can work quickly and still put out a good product? Or are you just saying take some time before you start to look at what you're doing?
No no, I do manage to produce good quality work when I work fast. It's more a matter of doing ad-hoc requests when you have a lot of prior planned work. That can disrupt your flow. One thing I do do is read emails as they come through. Some people wait until lunch or something if they have work to do, but I found that a quick glance doesn't hurt anyone
I keep a checklist and use my email inbox as a secondary checklist by leaving important things I need to respond to on unread. In my opinion, if you try to knock things out as soon as they come across your desk, you'll always be scattered and never actually finish anything.
Personally, I get a shit ton of work accomplished in the morning when I'm awake and highly caffeinated, spend the middle of the day in meetings or on-site, spend the post-lunch doldrums period being lazy on social media and posting on WSO, etc. and then after 3 or 4 get back after it again.
That's kinda what I'm figuring out. Definitely most productive when I get in and pretty much follow the rest of that cycle to a tee. Do you try and prioritize tasks by deadline? I know it's a different dtd for you as you're much more senior in your firm than I am in mine
Bit of a mix of by deadline and by what I actually want to do. I have found that after knocking some easy or entertaining things off, I'm more in the groove of working and it's easier to knock out things I don't particularly want to do or things I have to finish ASAP.
Also, in development, most things are due yesterday anyhow.
I always have a notepad with me and every day I figure out what needs to be done within the next few hours, by the end of the day or can be put off if need be. Every day I start a new page as to not confuse work from the previous day. Personally, I enjoy writing it out by had as I think it helps me reinforce what I need to do in the back of my head.
Over time you can also try new things and find what works best for you. Everyone I work with has a different way of staying organized. I would definitely recommend getting as much done each day as you can. You never want to be in a position where you put things off then get a surprise assignment come up or you get sick and suddenly you have to turn things in late.
Great insight. I've been doing the notepad thing. Need to work on my organization though. Notes look like an Eminem lyric page.
