Private Equity in Emerging Markets
If you were a private equity firm looking to invest in a new/emerging market, what statistics would you be most interested in? GDP growth rate, etc..? In addition, what other information would you put a priority on knowing?
African demographics and credit growth.

Anyone here have experience with EM PE? Would be interested to hear your thoughts.
Recently I went to Africa for an internship with a local investment company, so I may not be the most "experienced" but well informed on the topic. EM is an area I find quite interesting and promising, thus it has become my career focus. Let me start by asking how you are looking to approach this, 1) investing while living in the US into an EM country, or 2) investing in an EM country while living within that country? I ask because there are slight differences.
I'll start by giving you something to think about. First, EM PE professionals cover a particular geographic location, e.g. Africa, and then, maybe, an industry. And secondly, if you plan on working from the US, hopefully you're from a foreign country or speak a foreign language, if not two languages. Thirdly, the number of EM PE funds in the US are quite small, this is due to the nature of investing in EM. Investors of these funds like to see the fund has a presence within the country that can watch over their investments VERY closely.
Do you have any specific questions I can answer. The best piece of advice I can give you, as I have gotten and continue to get, if you are truly passionate about investing in emerging markets or any other country besides the US and Western Europe, is to move the country that you feel most strongly about. I will be heading South America shortly.... A great book to read is The Emerging Markets Century, the author is the pioneer of the the term, emerging market.
What's your background Blackberry? I.e. what experience have you acquired heretofore that puts you in a position to relocate with confidence. Seems very risky for a relative newcomer to the industry - albeit, one that may pay strong dividends. Very interested to hear more.
Cheers
I am very interested in this as well. I have spent 2+ years living in South America and speak Spanish and Portuguese and hope to go back sometime in the future. I would love to work in EM PE/VC some day. Any suggestions on how/where to find firms in this space? I get the feeling there are very few PE firms in South America. Anyone have any experience in this?
