How to Prepare for Upcoming PE Internship?
Hey guys, I'll be starting my position as an intern at a PE firm soon. This will be my first exposure to PE so I'm just trying to read up about it, and I'm also just topping up my financial modeling skills.
Anything else or any tips for me before the internship starts?
Thanks a lot!

How to prepare for PE internship? (Originally Posted: 05/16/2016)
I am starting my internship Monday and getting kinda nervous. On my offer letter it stated that I am going to be doing the following
-Support deal team in any research and execution efforts related to thesis development, deal execution, or portfolio company management -Utilize research methods to track and analyze investment preferences and backgrounds of the firm's existing and prospective investor base; keep such preferences up to date in firm database -Work on other relevant projects within the firm as they arise
This is what the last intern put on his/her resume
-Supported the deal team with due diligence for potential acquisition targets by performing industry research, market-sizing, preparing materials for meetings with business partners and researching leadership of target companies • Reviewed CIM’s to analyze likely investments and conducted LBO analysis to affirm potential acquisitions met return hurdles • Created decks for marketing purposes to assist Founding Partners and VP’s to use in the pitching process to investors • Constructed a primer as part of strategic planning for the use of a portfolio company in the trucking and logistics industry
So, how do I prepare for this type of work? I would like a return offer at this firm and really want to impress my managers
I am going to be something similar but I don't think there are many ways to prepare.

Hi all
I have a 1.5 month internship with a $5b AUM PE firm that focuses on TMT and Healthcare soon. I have no relevant IB or PE experience. Could anyone advise the best way to utilise my next two free weeks to learn as much about PE/investing as possible to actually add value? Any resources, book etc recommendations would be highly appreciated. Should I just try and finish the BIWS financial modelling course?
Thanks!

Advice for PE internship (Originally Posted: 06/20/2012)
Hello monkeys,
I was hoping that somebody could shed some light on PE internships for me. I have been in my current PE internship (unpaid, not a BB) for a few weeks now and I would like to get some advice on what my end goals should be. Obviously, I am networking, taking notes, trying to get face time, etc. In terms of work, I have been working on lbo and dcf models and doing some industry research. What other skills should I be honing? I know that improving excel skills is a must. Also, I should add that I'm a rising sophomore at a semi target. Thanks!
transaction experience
2 words brady. Very informative.
Try to get a good overview of the process involved outside of your deals youve been working on. Get to know the investment thesis and how to construct one. Get to know about the other aspects of the fund - the sourcing, legal work, and as much as you can in general about the funding/investing process. Get very familiar with the sources and uses of the funds and the reasoning for the capital structure.
Try to sit in on investment committee meetings. Usually comprises mostly of senior guys. Not sure how big your PE firm is, but if it's on the smaller end, you might be able to at least sit on it (just take notes, dive into the thought processes that these guys have when considering investments or exits for their portfolio companies).
Agree with everything said above. I found it really helpful to look through the management agreement/partnership agreement (whatever they call it) if you have access to it. It lays out everything (some can be extremely long 100+ pages) but you will get a solid overview.
Thanks for the advice guys
Tips for a summer PE internship (Originally Posted: 05/18/2007)
So I landed myself a summer spot at a middle-market PE shop (~600mm under management, write checks of 10-35mm) and will be spending 10 weeks there June-Aug. They've never hired an analyst straight from ugrad; seem somewhat open to it, but haven't mentioned anything about full-time employment.
To anyone who's worked in PE pre-banking or consulting, either as an intern or full-time: how difficult is it to make the transition, and is it reasonable to assume that I'll learn enough during the summer to be able to take on a ft role? I plan to work my ass off, try to get my job extended into senior year, and work from there. I've already read up on their 3 funds and familiarized myself with their basic model template (all material I requested.)
Any other suggestions? (The thread on how to pick investments was useful, so thanks for that.)
Hey,
I'm a summer intern for one of the world's largest aluminum companies and I was wondering could anyone provide me with a modeling template? DCF Models? M&A Models? LBO Models?
My email is [email protected]....
Thanks,
Nicholas
bump, son.
I thought all of you were rock stars in the internship game, from the self-congratulatory talk that goes on on these boards. No one has any experience worth sharing, huh?
well most PE shops don't hire straight out of undergrad, but that fact that you have the internship gives you a shot. How many other junior guys work there? Are you going to be allowed to do modeling and look at deals? If so, and you prove to them that you are capable, I don't see why you couldn't be hired FT.
I'm sure it has been done (especially for smaller PE shops that don't have a rigid recruiting process), but I think you will need to show a level of maturity and competence that is difficult to do at 21.
I went the typical iBanking - PE route so I don't have direct experience...if you can skip the banking and go straight to PE I would do it.
Thanks, nychimp. They have two guys at the analyst level. I'll be doing sector and company research, some modeling, and have been promised the chance to sit in on any meetings with mgmt teams for prospective or active deals, and to get some experience with due dili if a deal goes through that stage over the summer.
From your experience, what do you consider to be tangible aspects of maturity and competence, besides picking up the technical skills?

Anybody whose done an equity research summer internship in the past have any tips / anecdotes / information for incoming interns based on your experiences? I've gone through some of the older threads on this forum, so advice from people who completed an internship last year would also be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I am in equity research. I did not really prepare at all other than just general knowledge of the markets. I would find the companies your Analyst covers and research them. I would probably look at the Analyst's notes if you can find them online. What firm will you be working at? If it is unpaid, I would say don't let the lack of money be an incentive to slack off. I worked unpaid and it has definitely worked in my favor even though it didn't pay bills. Feel free to pm me.

Asking bankers at PE internship for IB advice (Originally Posted: 10/04/2011)
I started interning at a small PE firm about a month ago (mostly grunt work). During my interview they asked what I want to do for a living. I said that I was still exploring options, but IB is probably what I want to do. Everyone at the PE firm came from IB and eitherwent to a target or a semi-target. I am a junior at a non-target.
Would it be appropriate for me to ask an analyst if I could buy him coffee some time to get some more information on IB? Or would that come off as me just wanting to use their connections?
Thank you in advance for any advice.
Not at all. You're there as extra help, and aside from the di minis amount they'll pay you, would be fine I'd think.
Advice is cheap and only costs them a little bit of their time. I'd be shocked if they viewed your asking as negative (unless they are looking to hire you full time after your internship). As Stringer mentioned, I wouldn't actually ask them to pull strings for you unless you're friends with them or they can speak to your high level of performance.
Thank you!
