Production support Analyst @ IB
Background:
I graduated from a non-target business school in Canada with a B.B.A, specialized in Finance and I also did a minor in Computer Science at McGill (I had average grades in general - but pretty good grades in finance and cs)
I decided to take a break from academia before doing an Msc in Europe but due to my poor networking skills and maybe for some other reasons, I couldn’t secure an internship as an analyst anywhere...
Situation:
I recently got accepted in a two-year program for the position of Production support analyst (also known as application support analyst, technology analyst…) in a top-tier investment banking institution in Montreal.
Here’s an extract of the job description:
*Production support involves working closely with business stakeholders (such as traders) to resolve any issues with technical systems and applications. In a trading environment, traders will typically raise 'tickets' – _requests for help – _with the support teams, usually over e-mail or by telephone. Those tickets will enter a queue of work where the progress of investigations can be tracked. The Production Support team pick up those tickets and work to address the issues, liaising with other technical teams where necessary. Being in Production Support you will be getting a lot of exposure to the trading desk, picking up how (for example) Derivatives are priced, as Support Analysts will be responsible for working on the technical side of these systems. Whilst doing this they also stay close to the technical side of things using Unix, SQL etc on a daily basis.”
Skills necessary to perform the role are:
- Ability to perform in a time pressured environment
-Problem Solving skills
-Basic SQL
-Excellent communication (all forms)
-Team Player
-Bachelor Degree in either Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or Physics
What you will learn:
-Unix & Linux OS
-Scripting (Shell scripts/Perl/Python)
-SQL
-Experience of Middleware – Preferably TibcoRV, MQ, EMS*
Although this role seems pretty cool, I am not really sure of what to expect … I have been discussing with people that are currently working there in this role and here's what I have gathered:
-People comes from various background but rarely business admin, more like cs with honors or engineers. Some already have experience, some don't...nobody with finance background
-Most of them enjoy being there and depending on who I was talking to, but we don't have all the same aspirations so its difficult to relate
- Some people have managed to organize and automatize their workflow to free time to work on more interesting project
- Some guy told me that management gave them a special project revolving around Machine learning to work on during downtime, but that they were not much downtime..
- Not everybody ends up with the same responsibilities and some are still not sure whether they made the right decision by accepting the offer
-there's a common consensus about the fact that the job puts in position to meet both traders and developers, so it could be nice to get exposed to both world and also to network ...

Qutions:
What do you guys thinks are the exit options with this kind of position?
Does it seems like just an other operation support , MO or BO position to you?
I feel like it could open the door to a lot of different opportunities. It gives me the impressions that if you put in the effort and if you manage to get up to speed technology-wise, you could get access to technical roles in the FO, but maybe I’m just delusional?
I’m also interested in doing a double Msc in Finance and Computer science (or data science…) and since I originally come from a management background with okay grades, if I do good there, work on good projects and build on my knowledge of programming languages as well as finance, maybe I could access to this kind of master more easily? long-term goals is quant trading..
But at the same time, this will be the first real working experience I undertake after graduating, and I am afraid that by doing so, I will be categorized as an IT guy and ruin my chances to get access to finance analyst roles (in case I don't enjoy the IT world) or even get access to master from target schools...
Am I going to be stuck there forever if I take the it?
What do you guys think? Has anyone came across this kind of opportunity or even work as prod support analyst?
I welcome any kind of answer!!
up !
mate this is literally IT support
literally the definition of BO
Yeah that's what I figured... but what I'm trying to figure out is what would be the exit ops of a such position and is it going to slow all of my early career or not ?
