PSA: How to get blacklisted from IB

To all college students recruiting for IB, this is how you get black listed from Wall Street:

Email between Student and Associate at EB:

Student:
“One simple question, Associate

Do you also keep pushing back or not answering client calls? Is this how bankers handle business?”

Associate:
Student, I pushed to 6:00pm ET - when I didn’t hear from you at 6:07pm ET, I called you and didn’t get an answer. Are you upset I didn’t wait by my phone for a call back? I don’t even know how to respond to your email and good luck with recruiting”

Student:
“I am upset how you kept postponing calls has messed up my schedule for the whole day. I am also upset md yawned over the phone and the way he answered questions impatiently. Everyone’s time is valuable, not only your bankers.

I am reaching out because I respect you and your firm, but I did not receive the same respect.

Good luck with your career and with the reputation of EB.”

lol does anyone have a screenshot? or where i can find this gold

While the OP is posting an egregious case, I am surprised by students that give off a pretty entitled vibe.

I have had several students miss phone calls (without notification) and not be flexible with their time while trying to setup a networking call with me. I went to college (in most cases to the same school as the student), I know what the schedule is like and I can tell you that, while everyone’s situation is different, most likely you aren’t very busy (and I worked two jobs in school and had many other activities).

It is surprising to me, if someone you are trying to network with gives you multiple hours over a week you should be able to find a time to make it work. But more importantly, don’t start off a networking email by telling the banker/consultant/etc what works for you, try to work around their schedule, they are more likely much more busy (and in some cases have families, etc).

Hitting him with the passive aggressive, "sure." Jesus, that kid is clueless.

Absolute clown. This is what ruins cold email response rates for the rest of the hustlers.

True. And that's the real tragedy of this isn't it? If I was the Moelis guy, next time some UTA student asks for a bit of my time I'd be tempted to delete the email unanswered. Who needs the aggravation?

And there are so few people who have made it who are willing to be helpful later, and stuff just burns the more generous folks.

Lmfao what did I just read. Props to the Moelis analyst for keeping his cool lol

I wouldn’t even respond to that clown. That associate gave him the upper hand by getting defensive.

I legitimately think stuff like this happens at all the hardo-filled publics (UMich, UT, Cal, UVA). And NYU too although not public. It's why I recommend kids to go to private targets like Georgetown, Duke, Brown, Notre Dame, Vandy, Dartmouth, etc. I think the non-finance focus leads to a much better culture honestly.

I had no idea students could be so entitled. That's mind blowing to me. Imagine their attitude toward a student if they were a staffer. When networking, I haul my ass to the city, buy the coffee/tea, and haul my ass back. Sometimes it's a 2 hour trip for a 30 min chat. Humility is a virtue and crucial in a relationship driven industry.

mind-blowing. entitled cunts like these are probably why some bankers are reluctant to talk to kids who reach out.

Fucking Generation Z

This response is so far from anything normal that it's not going to reflect on the school.

Then again who hasn't had a bad moment in college, not that smart to share the kid's name because there's only going to be a couple of those at the school, at most.

Yeah not that big a deal that his name gets shared, I mean, once it’s in an email it’s forever anyways. But I hope people would think hard before sharing someone’s name in a broad forum like a mass email chain or message board. The stakes are small here because it’s just the little world of IB recruiting, and not as funny an email as some. You can imagine how easily it could go viral if the subject was a bit more broad or the content a bit more entertaining. Sounds dramatic to say but lives get ruined easily. We don’t need another Aleksey Vayner situation.

Considering Moelis just did what I thought was a very generous thing with their incoming summers, I think it's safe to say they're not taking crap from anyone, especially from a semi-target

Did you read the actual "communication"? This isn't like the guy said something awkward in a coffee chat then got made fun of, that's "fratty and fun". This is an entitled jackass who acted like a spoiled cunt and ruins the impression of people towards other college kids tryna break in who aren't complete assholes. He deserves every piece of flak towards his way. Pretty sure OP meant well by posting this, as a reminder to college kids that this kind of behaviour is a huge red flag (though it should go without saying). I'd even go as far as to say it's good for him to receive criticism from this board or elsewhere.
