Public Sector and Infrastructure group at GS

I read a few of the forums on this group and developed a pretty pessimistic view. Is it really that bad? Anyone who can give fairly accurate and objective information on the group's exit opps, description of duties as a SA, and pay grade please comment. Furthermore, anyone know the likelihood of transitioning into a FT role on the corporate side after completing the summer internship?

Have a cousin doing Public Finance Full time at a MM regional bank (WB/Baird/Piper/STHR). Seems very niche, may consider exits in Debt/Credit firms? Modeling is not the same as traditional IB. Pay base is same to that of traditional IB within the same firm, think bonus is considerably less. Check out Mergers and Inquisitions "Public Finance Investment Banking Analyst."

It's their PubFin group. It's in their investment banking division. GS has a really good internal mobility program, so crush it in the summer and you'll have a good chance on moving into a different group, if there're spots available in that group.

Exits opps are limited since it's Pubfin and pay grade is the same as analysts in IBD

A few of my good friends have worked for GS/MS/JPM within the pubfin group. Definitely very niche, modeling is centered around bond math and bond markets since your clients are issuing debt and they use a program (DBC) that does a lot of the work. Base pay is the same, but I think the bonus is less too as previously stated since you primarily compete on cost so you get lower fees. Exit opps if you stay in the group are definitely limited but could be to a muni bond fund or somewhere in public policy, but my friends have either stayed or attempted to exit to more traditional IBD to then get access to more traditional exit opps since it is such a niche space.

Hi sorry about the erroneous double comments here, but I've been jumping around forums lately.

If you're looking at public sector work in IB/PE then an MBA is the way to go. The only alternative I hear is an MSRE from a top program like Cornell's.

Again, sorry about the double posts.

Hey CarryTheInterest, I swear if I had a silver banana for every lonely thread I posted too I'd be richer than @compbanker ...
