Public Finance to M&A

This summer I'm interning at a MM in public finance and I had some questions regarding future opportunities.

I'm a rising senior at a target but my gpa is low. I was fortunate to get this internship because I got back from my study abroad in June. However, it seems that the opportunities for my future are not great because I want to go into M&A.

Does anyone have advice on how to push from Pub Fin to a more traditional IB analyst position? I really have no idea how it works after I finish my internship in mid-August. I enjoy Public Finance, but should talk to the Managing Director (who I report to) and ask him for help in making this switch?

Thanks in advance!
