Are you talking about client facing (retail) investment advisor role or institutional. I can't speak to the latter but in the retail world, you can do quite well. Have been at it 29 yrs. Most of the folks I know with 15+ yrs or more make several hundred thousand / yr. Many have also moved into a recurring revenue model so they are not so much selling new business, but rather managing existing relationships and receiving ongoing trail based compensation. Rule of thumb at retail (independent not large branded company) is approx 1% of AUM. Manage 100M, earn 1M. The branded shops will charge the same or more, but severely cut the comp to the advisor in exchange for office support. Could be a good or bad deal depending on the advisor.
