PWM Intern unsure of job prospects.
First post ever on this site, not exactly sure if this fits the type rhetoric that goes on here but I digress:
Hey all, I am your average Joe but call me M.
Large state school graduate in May 19, BBA in Finance also average GPA 3.0+. Came from a single mother and low income family. Free tuition and low student debt sounded like a viable option for me. Didn't want to end up stuggling for money throughout life so I was driven to pursue the money and go into finance. Upon taking classes I became extremely passionate for finance and economics. I read up on WSJ, Marketwatch, Bloomberg, and Reddit forums every single morning. Joined and participated in many clubs, case studies and networking events and landed myself a PWM internship after graduation.
I am interested in a lot of areas in finance of course but ultimately I would like to see myself towards the end of my career as a fund manager. Although I have a small family, I am not in any sort of long term commitments whether they be relationships or debt. Which basically means working 80+ hour work weeks do not bother me whatsoever.
Been described as life of the party and easy going with just about everybody. Why does this matter? Because I was never the guy studying everynight and it seems like I probably should've been. I firmly believe I have the brains and determination to succeed in any type of role or field but I often second guess myself if I should be pursuing one thing or the other. I don't regret any choices I made, but I do often consider what my job prospects would've been if I had just tried a little harder in those accounting/ art classes. All I know is I am driven to go into finance with a keen interest in buy-side research, PM and AM.
Frequently I try to schedule coffees with some of the professionals in my area (large city in South). I have lunch next week with a mid cap IB firm, a health care company's CFO looking for an analyst, and a broker looking for someone to take on team orientated advisory firm. Not sure where to go from here but if anyone has any advice for me or wants to talk over the phone about their careers moves please feel free to reply. Basically I am looking to build a network around the globe and make it in this damn industry.
Cheers!
