Q&A: Non-target > BB Tech IB > Tech Start Up Founder
Hi All – not sure if there will be massive interest in this Q&A, but thought I’d give it a shot. My startup is Hidden Rides – a search engine for car forum classifieds. Like many of you, my journey began as a bright eyed college kid (many years ago), aspiring to make the big bucks at a coveted BB. I went to a non-target, so it required years of off seasonal internships during the school year, learning to network, kind individuals, and a whole lot of luck. I eventually landed an SA gig at a top 3 BB – which turned into a FT role in a Tech seat. A few more years of that, and I got the idea for this startup. Questions/Feedback/H8 – all is welcome.
Site looks great. On a personal note, are you hiring for co-founders with PE connections?
Thanks for trying it out. I am not - this probably wont be a PE play, too small.
"hiring co-founders"
It's a thing, I swear
How do you get paid? (Website looks fantastic but I don't see any ads)
Can you speak to what you see the exit being worth?
What made you want to start your own website?
What industry-specific knowledge/hard skills did you take away from the FT role at the BB that you directly apply now in your day-to-day with your startup?
not too much overlap - but i would say excel skills, ability to write cohesive emails, trained to work working 24/7 (or at least 80+ hrs a week)
...
skills were excel modeling, powerpoint decks, managing analysts, etc...the normal stuff.
long term, id say IB sets you up better for a strategy role, internal M&A, CFO, etc - from what i have seen.
I started this early in my sell side career, so cant speak about how transferable it is one you make director, MD etc
Do you have a technical background or use third parties to develop the tech? I'm currently considering a tech startup, however, I am not a technical founder so I want to understand avenues of finding folks who can develop the product.
Thanks!
i do not, got really lucky and am close friends with the other co-founder (coding genius)
Man, this is a pretty good idea. I used to have my own automotive company when I was in college where I flipped cars and sold parts, and this would have been very useful.
What's the plan for it going forward?
Just as some brief feedback/suggestions:
It seems like you have a decent selection of forums so far, but still missing some pretty popular ones (bimmerforums, r3vlimited, etc. just to name a few).
Having the option to select more than one state at a time would be extremely helpful for filtering.
I know there are websites for this already, but if you could somehow incorporate craigslist into this as well, I think it could be a one stop shop for a lot of people.
The "I'm interested in this car" section was a little confusing. Wasn't very clear what to put in the car listing details sections.
Again, really cool idea. I'll definitely follow along to see updates to the site.
