It's kinda confusing but here's my understanding of how it works at one of those shops (GAMCO) which might not be universal. Analysts are doing research for both the sell-side and buy-side orgs at the same time. So you will put a buy on a company after doing some analysis, and the buy side PM's will look at it, ask questions, maybe put on a trade. The firm's research clients will also be reading it and asking questions about it etc.
