Question Regarding Internships
Hey everyone, I'm a new member but a long time lurker.
I'm currently going to be a Junior this year at Rutgers. Majoring in Economics w/ a Statistics background. I intended to do Accounting, but no go. Finance's GPA was .2 out of my range, so I didn't get into the Business school. (GPA is roughly 3.2, and could hit 3.4 by the end of next semester)
Anyways, I was just wondering what I could expect regarding internship opportunities and offers. I know every situation is different and there is always a chance, but am I likely to land a summer IB analyst position at a top bank? (top 10 I'm talking about)
I am in Alpha Kappa Psi, and am currently interning at Siemens Corporation in the Tax Department. It was my only opportunity, so I had to take it. (Btw, if the interviewer asks why I went into tax, what are so plausible responses?) They only idea I can think of would be to explain how M&As rely a great deal on taxes/benefits and how I would have gained some insight for that.
So I guess I'm asking 2 questions in this...How likely is it for me to land a summer internship at say GS, LB, or JPM. And also, how can I explain my current experiences and how are they helpful, if at all?
Thanks in advance for any help. I'll appreciate any replies and any other tips if available.

Rutgers places zero, one, or at most two students at top investment banks per year. Those who get in have connections, terrific grades, admittance to a program such as SEO (still quite difficult), most likely with a combination of the aforementioned (there are exceptions).
This coming recruiting cycle will be even more challenging given a potential cutback in recruiting...
Consider some options here...
1) Push hard and make it happen somehow
2) Work at a fortune 500 company, big 4 accounting, the fed, ratings agency (S&P, Moody's etc) - and then go back to a top business school, and come in as an associate where you'll be fresh and get paid more
3) Work within an industry you have interest in (i.e. tech, healthcare, real estate etc.) and then apply to investment banking groups that specialize within your interest
I can go on... Bottom line - it is possible, but unlikely given your standing at Rutgers. I've seen top IB resume books, and most of the non-target students have high GPA's (think 3.7-4.0) and excellent internship experience.
