Questions about Canada and ER firms.
Hey, please don't shit on me for posting a Canada thread.
So I'm graduating this semester from a US college (complete non-target) and trying to cast an extremely wide net as far as employment goes. I'm finishing up my citizenship app (mom is Canadian) so that shouldn't be a problem. I have a few questions.
-
Assuming I'm not applying for a US bank, how do the more regional/boutique firms treat US applicants? Are they given equal footing to Canadian applicants?
-
Once again, assuming I'm not applying for a US bank, will I be trapped in Canada? I know this is dependent on a million factors but just in general.
-
Should I even bother? How competitive are entry level positions? I'm going to look into whatever I can find but I just want to figure out the best way to focus my energy.
Non-target...how non-target. Having worked HR in Canada there are a stunning number of US Universities that don't meet our minimum requirements. So, you should check that first. Any top 100 I'm sure is fine, but there an astounding amount that didn't make it.
I find it very strange how you can you have the greatest schools in the world, but no minimum requirement to use the title University/College.
No clue on banking, but in Consulting there is no barrier from moving between UK/USA/CAN in my experience.
Closer to 200 than 100...
Any ideas on #3 for consulting in Canada? I've been told that my non-finance work experience (worked full-time through school) might be decent for consulting.
Well right now, Deloitte is hiring like crazy. Depending on your grades/studies MBB are all in Toronto. McKinsey is out in Calgary (along with a lot of the major banks) and BCG might still be. These have a very heavy Energy focus (Oil/Gas/Energy/Utilities) and probably knowledge of heavy industry would be helpful. Banks wise, Barclays for sure is in Calgary doing energy work...not sure on which others.
My assessment is less competition for consulting/banking roles, particularly out West. Engineers are prime, and solid jobs in the oil industry for most graduates (High School grads earning 120-150k 2-3 years out of school rigging).
Good luck, and hope you like the cold.
Thanks man, I really appreciate it. Definitely realize that my "college" is going to be a weak point but nothing I can really do about that now. Time to talk to relatives that I haven't seen in years to see if they have anything...
