Questions about GS Middle/Back Office Internships.
I go to college in the NYC Area. Completely non-target 3rd tier. But GS hires people for SA and Analyst Positions from our school for their Finance Division.
I am trying to land a Internship in the Finance Division - Controllers Group. (Giving Operations - Derivatives Operations as 2nd choice).
Finance is MO right?
Go on laugh. But I really don't know anything about what these Divisions/Groups do. Can someone please explain. (These are the Divs where people from my school got in)
And on the application menu, there are several options to choose for Internships. I understand what a Summer Analyst Position and an Off-Cycle Internship means, but there are these options that are confusing me.
One Year Work Placement and Six Month Work Placement programs.
Any clue on what they are?
If you're in NYC, you should try to find a boutique or something that will take you on as an intern during the semester or over the summer (even if its for free). That would be much more of a better experience than BO at GS (unless you want BO at GS, which is perfectly fine and understandable).
.
What the f are you talking about? Controller is the definition of back office
The 6 month work placement program is the same thing as a coop. Schools like Drexel and Northeastern have a cooperative education program, where you work 6 months, then go to school 6 months, and so on. I'm assuming one year is an extension of this, but I don't know of any schools that use it. 99% of schools will fall into the two categories you understand, and if it follows your school's structure, then apply to one of those two.
If you want to work at GS, both jobs are a great back door way to get into the firm from a non-target. If you do a great job during your internship, you may have the opportunity to move to something else for a second internship or FA. Think of it this way-- the MDs and VPs you're working under are all shareholders. As such, they want people who add value to work for their firm. Where do people add the most value? Where they are happiest. Obviously these opportunities only arise for the top performers and people who are able to network.
Certainly if controllers/ops interests you, these positions are that much better. Check to see where the positions are. Ops is in NJ, but I'm not sure about controllers. If controllers is at 200 West, then you just received the keys to the castle and will have ample opportunity to network and see a plethora of groups and products. Get to 200 West if you can.
Good luck man.
yeah dont listen that guy up there if you take an offer for controller at gs you just committed career suicide
I don't understand why people who are still in school give advice like this. At best, you are repeating other advice someone else has given that you happen to see on this website. At worst, you're completely misleading someone. Either way, you're no more useful than the search function.
