Questions to ask during PE networking
I am currently a 1st year Analyst in London at a MM and I am prepping some questions to ask during coffee chats when I start to network within PE. What questions do you guys think are good to ask during networking chats? I am looking for ones that would give me a better sense of their culture and investment strategy etc, or just generally would be good to ask
I ask this because if I was go back to my very first few networking calls for IB, there are a few questions I would go back to ask to get a better sense of the group and the type of work they do.
Thanks in advance!
Hey Analyst 1 in IB - Cov, I'm the WSO Monkey Bot and I'm here since nobody responded to your thread! Bummer...could just be time of day or unlucky (or the question/topci is too vague or too specific). Maybe one of these topics will help:
More suggestions...
Hope that helps.
- Typical deal team size - a lot of the team dynamics can be traced back to this number in my opinion
- Visibility into typical deal process/ participation in IC meetings - would you be a model and ppt churner or do you actually get the chance (or the impression at least) that your voice matters when making the investment decision?
- Growth runway for a young professional - progression steps, hint re. partner track availability
- Team dynamics - as an associate, how much responsibility can you undertake? What's the ceiling there?
Then there's a lot of more firm-specific questions potentially regarding: a new fundraise (any change in strategy going on or same old), launch of an impact platform (like everyone these days), how has the firm changed since the person you're talking to started, where do you see the firm go in the next 10 years, etc.
The rationale behind these qs is that it's not all about your job and how you fit into the org, it's also (perhaps mostly) about your conveying your interest in the firm, it's strategy, it's way of investing. The way I see it, if the person you're talking to can stop monitoring his/ her email while talking to you because they actually need to think a little about how to answer, then you've succeeded at engaging a little (obviously this can apply to saying some crazy isht but let's analyze reasonable cases here).
