Questions to ask recruiter

Hey guys,

I’m in a position where I can ask a recruiter for a job I just applied for a few questions. This is my first time doing this kind of thing, and I was wondering what kind of questions about the role/ company I could ask that make the connection seem worthwhile and make me potentially stand out as an applicant. I’m from a non target so this opportunity is pretty rare/ exciting for me.

Thanks a ton

Will your questions be answered by the recruiter, somebody on the team, or a mix?

Also, any kind of basic information on the position will be helpful (e.g. generalist vs. industry-specific, type of work, type of company)...

Things that come to mind, hoping they are relevant despite the limited info on the role:

  • What is the typical background of other team members/ people you would work with?
  • In what ways do they experience the company's unique culture on a daily basis? [Fun fact, all companies have a "unique culture"]
  • What are the typical touchpoints with clients, what is the typical role of junior team members during these touchpoints, and how can junior team members be more involved in client-facing activities?
  • What are ways you can be involved in the broader office life through e.g. affinity groups, volunteering, event organization?

Any other questions about recent events impacting the company can be well perceived, but I would focus on positive news and keeping the question at a relatively high-level, allowing an HR rep to comment and not feel diminished.

if you're using a recruiter to get a job, be warned that if you're just marginally better than their (the firm hiring) 2nd choice, they will opt for 2nd as they don't have to pay your recruiter.

I don’t think it would count as using the recruiter- i’m being introduced to them via a mutual connection and it’s more of a chance to speak to them and (hopefully, if they like me) increase the likelihood of getting an interview for this competitive position. Then again, this is fairly new stuff to me so it could fall under what you’re saying.
