Quitting without a plan

A few of my friends at my firm constantly talk about quitting. I have been advising them not to, because I think they would all languish in unemployment. None of them have anything on the line, and only one of them has seriously even pursued another job. I think they're all chickenshit millenials who are too entitled for their own good. One is having an existential crisis over how other people make more than him, despite the fact he only joined recently and switched careers.

To be fair, the job is a dead-end (no moving up, only moving out), and we have the distinct possibility of no bonus this year (~25% of comp). They all have the financial flexibility to quit, but not the balls, apparently.

Am I being fair in my criticism? Would you quit without something to move on to?

I was definitely intrigued by your "life after IB" series. And I'm very happy for you that you've found what it is you love doing and had the will power to pursue it. But please don't turn into a preacher. It will get old really, really fast. (Don't get on the defensive. I'm just being fully sincere)

I often dream about doing exactly that.

Shut the fuck up. Don't you have voice lessons to attend? If not, you should, you sound like someone is slitting your throat. Yeah I checked out your poor excuse of a talent. And where the fuck did you learn how to play the piano? You're bad at banking AND music? I'm sure your following of hipsters will keep you afloat though.
Under my tutelage, you will grow from boys to men. From men into gladiators. And from gladiators into SWANSONS.

Since when has quitting become a good thing in sociey? Fuck the trophy generation. If you don't like what you do, you probably should have done research on the fucking job prior. Not wake up one day and say, "Hey, I'll try banking today!" Plus what Flake said.

Keep two things in mind: 1) Quitting does not mean becoming a failure and/or less ambitious. Many people quit to take life by the balls and do something more exciting, such as starting a business, traveling, or pursuing a passion. Everybody has different goals, but I personally will feel like a failure if I work for someone else for the rest of my life. So, at some point, I will need to quit.
2) You can only learn so much about a job by researching it beforehand. A lot of people do tons of research on something, only to find out that it's not for them when they actually do it. I spent 3+ years of my life researching Econ PhD programs and preparing to get into one, only to realize that it wasn't for me. But I never would have learned that, if I didn't actually get in and experience it first hand.

I guess what I'm saying really only applies to those who spontaneously choose a career path. Working for 5-10 years in a field and then moving on to bigger and better things is great. I support that, but there are too many assholes who wait until halfway through college to pick a career for all the wrong reasons, like money. I've got friends wanting to become doctors and lawyers, but they don't realize how things are changing against their favor. I chose finance, because I've loved it since before high school and there are so many different things you can do with a degree in finance and economics. This anonymousman guy was destined to be an artist, but decided to sit at a desk, because he wanted money. Then he quits and says how much he hates it and it makes the industry look bad.

Let me ask a simple question - do they hate the work or hate to work? Because i've had people in my area/department, that used to gripe about the work all the time but did no better when they eventually sneaked into the areas they wanted to - they presumed they'll be living the dream in the new area(s) but the sad truth is - most of them actually (4 out of 9 ppl) couldn't even take the pressure that came with the job.

Distance yourself from these people immediately. They don't want to be there and therefore don't matter. They are poison, and you have bigger and better things to concern yourself with.

If they're going to quit, then quit. Or shut the hell up about it. Saying it is one thing, doing it is another: tell them to shit or get off the pot.

Get busy living
