RE AM firms with good work/life balance
I've been working in consulting for a few years, and realized that I have a passion for real estate, not quite related to what I'm doing right now (i'm not doing RE consulting or any type of valuation). Kind of tired of the travel with consulting, but really enjoyed the people/culture/team atmosphere, (where the guy sitting next to you isn't competing head2head against you).
Essentially I want to work in RE Asset Management. (also potentially Development if the right opportunity comes around, but legit opportunities in development seem to be scarce at the moment). I'm looking for opportunities that will still allow me to have some interaction with the real assets themselves.
Second, I would like to have a good work/life balance, 45-55 hours a week. Working in a laid-back atmosphere, with good down-to-earth people. I'm not trying to make 500K a year, I would be perfectly happy, after 5 or so years working up the ladder, earning 150-200k. (I did a i-banking internship in college.....clearly wasn't the right fit for me, judge me if you like, just not for me)
I hope that there are others on this forum that understand my wanting to .....be in finance, work in real estate, earn a comfortable salary, and still have a life. I would appreciate some educated suggestions/experiences/observations on this.
Finance isn't really the best field if you're looking for a work/life balance. That said, you won't be worked to death in AM firms...maybe 50-60 hours as the norm. If you want lower hours your best bet would be smaller/boutique firms...but that also results in lower pay.
Where are you looking to work? NYC naturally has a lot of things, including RE, but remember the cost of living is so high that 150-200k might not be as comfortable of a life as you'd hope. I know there's a lot of RE stuff in Dallas where I live...not sure about other cities though.
