Where to learn modeling skills for real estate?
Hey,
I am wanting to join a real estate firm on the development or acquisition side. Most of these positions require the applicant to understand how to put together excel models on deals. My University never taught anything of the sort, so I have tried picking it up through Breaking Into Wallstreet, but I don't feel like it is that effective for real estate.
Does anyone have any suggestions on where to go for information? I am willing to do anything to learn what I need to learn to get one of these positions. Thanks
Real Estate modeling is bizarre, though usually more to the point. Pretty much you're just constantly trying to get to a cash figure, basically the entire point of coverage on the IBD side in real estate is modeling yield on FCF. For something niche-y, I'd imagine you'd want to try to join a bank's real estate team. You'll definitely pick it up there.
REFM or Kahr.
Is REFM's certification worth getting?
You don't need to the cert. Just take the modeling class. I think Realogic has some training sheets you can buy too.
I second Khar. He is really excellent and a modeling vet.
Search itunes for: A4310 Real Estate Finance I
I recall there are 3 classes available (note the dates as the industry has changed a lot over the teaching periods, but the fundamentals apply and you cannot beat free): see classes for Real Estate Finance I,II & II at that site.
REFM or if you want to save money just look online
OP - what do you mean biws isn't effective for re? Did you purchase the 'RE specific course?

Hey guys - looking to sharpen my RE modeling skills. I work for a developer and do some simple modeling/projections off of templates we have already used in the past. Mostly just to see if the development is going to make sense and then we edit from there to make our numbers work.
Now I know there are plenty of courses out there that will help with this modeling but are any books that people recommend, or are the classes more worth it? I want to move to a bigger market and understand that I am going to have to be able to crank out DCFs and waterfall models and just really need some guidance.
I have had people send me some models/model tests but I am confused as to where to start on many of these as I have little experience. Is there anything out there that will walk me through the steps of a basic deal (youtube videos- forums-etc?)
Thanks everyone!
