Is it best to apply as soon as possible or wait until I've networked a decent amount?
Hi,
I'm a rising sophomore at a non-target and plan on applying to a couple BB Soph SA 2018 programs. Apps have already opened up, but I have 0 contacts at most of the banks. That being said, would it be a better idea to apply now then reach out, or the opposite?
Not sure if apps are reviewed on a rolling basis or not though, that would make me lean more towards applying right now.
You should have applied like 2 weeks and started networking 4 weeks ago at least (I know its absurd)
Apps are on a rolling basis and as a sophomore you're already at a disadvantage if you arn't diversity/top-candidate. Unless you are diversity, it'll be really hard to get a BB sophomore gig, especially since networking technically started at the end of fall and goes throughout summer. If I were you I'd also network with regional boutiques, MMs because as a non-target you are more likely to gain traction. Apply to BBs right now too. Good luck!
Thank you for the advice. I will make sure to target MMs, regionals, and BBs altogether for my networking efforts.
Would you mind critiquing my resume before I send in my applications? https://www.wallstreetoasis.com/forums/critique-a-rising-sophomores-res…
Are you supposed to apply online before you meet with someone? (Originally Posted: 06/27/2017)
I have a coffee with a BB guy in late july but the applications are already open. We've talked on the phone and he has my resume. Am I supposed to apply online now or wait and meet with him first. Am I supposed to apply online at all if HR gets my resume handed?
If I were I would apply online and then tell him you submitted the online application and ask for his help to make sure your profile gets a proper view
Thanks!
How many people is sufficient enough for networking before submitting application? (Originally Posted: 07/11/2016)
I go to a target school on the East Coast and I have gotten on the phone with around 5 alumni so far at a BB. The calls all went really well and received great feedback that I networked during the summer, early on. I am applying to the sophomore internship program for that bank in a couple weeks, but should I ask them to refer me to more people, or is this enough? I do not want to annoy them, too.
I would apply and update the people you networked with that you applied.
Five is fine, I'd follow up with whoever you connected best with/division you like most/senior and have them pass your resume. Start reaching out to other banks, both boutique and MM.

I definitely have someone I connected best with; she just started her 2nd year. After I apply, should I email her and specifically ask if she could put in a word for me - or is that way too blunt? What's a less intrusive way to imply that?
im wondering this too
You are thinking about this in a way that is not ideal.
The correct answer is that there is no right answer.
Or to give you a more meaningful correct answer, the correct answer is when the combined influence of the people who are willing to vouch for you is enoug to make them prefer you over the other candidates (going into the interview at least). Depending on the organization this can range from most of the team knowing you to having an enthusiastic Associate supporting your application.
Has anyone managed to get an interview through just their resume alone?
Reaching out with networking email before applying? (Originally Posted: 03/01/2018)
How would that be recieved? I'm looking at a couple of boutiques that have open applications for summer internships, and I'm trying to turn that cold application a little warm. I'd have no connection to them, and they posted on our school job board, but I'd just be emailing them with the classic info interview pitch. Would this work/could it hurt?
Absolutely do it. Wouldn’t hurt at all. It’s extremely challenging to get a job in this industry without networking.
