Real Estate Asset Management Superday in Canada (Starlight, Realstar, Fengate)

Hi everyone,

Looking for some advice on how to prep for a real estate asset management super day. This is my first super day ever. It's for an asset management analyst role. The schedule is as follows

  • 30 min case (I believe it's a modeling case)
  • 15 min presentation
  • 45 min with the executive vp/director
  • 30 with a vp and a director

Ended up getting the case study from adventures in CRE but i'm not sure how else to prepare. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

A 30 minute case study is almost guaranteed to come with a template that you just need to fill out. It won't be anything overly complex with that time limit, so if you're comfortable with modeling property cash flows I wouldn't sweat it. Spend more time thinking about how you'd present the analysis for the presentation portion (e.g. if it's a hold vs. sell analysis, what factors did you consider beyond what the numbers show? If it's comparing potential tenants, does the one with slightly lower NER and returns offer better synergy with the existing tenant mix?).

Other than that, treat it as a standard interview process. The 75 minutes of actual interviews aren't likely to have any technical questions if it's with the VP/director level. More likely going to be fit-based.

On a side note, super days like this are not very common in Canadian real estate and typically the interview process is much more staggered (e.g. initial screening phone interview, in person interview with Associates or Directors, then you either get a take home case or get scheduled for an in-person modeling test a few days later, then either meet with the team lead right after the modeling test or come back another day). Good luck, but if it doesn't go well don't worry, you probably won't have to do another one that intense.

I will probably make a follow up post to this interview...can't seem to ace the cases so far (not gonna jinx it) and it's been about a year. I've been somewhat collecting cases over the past year from interviewing so might be good to actually consolidate this for others. I actually bought some case material from breakintocre and adventuresincre for this interview so we'll see how this goes. There was a hold/sell analysis so I might just try and verbally walk them through how I would do it. somewhat rusty on excel. it just seems so niche compared to smth like IB/PE just from the prep material online.
