It's a good idea, but only if you do it tactfully.

Only reach out to those you are particularly close to - a handful of mentors or people who took interest in you and so on. This doesn't need to be a mass email to everyone you've ever known. Most people will end up seeing it on your LinkedIn or it'll just come up naturally in conversation. In my experience, this works best if the people you tell actually helped you in some way with some insight or example and you are able to cite that. As an added bonus, if any of these people hire interns, getting on their radar early is not a bad call.

Feel free to post an example email if you're worried about the tone.

This is a good general approach. Personally, I love getting these type of follow up emails, if someone has been helpful to you, getting a personal note on your progress is awesome.

For the masses, do the LinkedIn post, I guess its a "WSO" thing that they are tacky (well I'm guessing some are??), but I think it's common to post about major moves like starting in an MRED program or new job, and I think people like seeing those!!!

I tend to lean more anti-LinkedIn announcement posts, partly because they've become a meme and partly because when you update your LinkedIn, it already sends a notice to your connections which people can, and do, like and respond to.

No one will get mad if you send a thank you email with an update with your current plans. I would send personalized emails and not a mass BCC. You could also send handwritten thank you's to the people you connected with most. Even if they don't respond, they'll likely remember that gesture in any future interactions you have with them. Good luck in grad school and congratulations.
