Real Estate - Jobs available between real estate and finance?
This seems like an area that is not talked about that often. What kinds of jobs are available in the intersection between real estate and finance?

Depends what you mean by "finance." Different RE career paths quite obviously rely on the theory of finance. RE investors, developers, brokers, lenders, etc. all use finance. But if you mean specifically financing of real estate, then that's a little different.
I'm guessing you mean the former, in which case the following thread appears pretty comprehensive. It's been quoted before and I'll quote it again (6th post down):

I think there are quite a few where they intersect, although I don't exactly know what you mean by finance because that is too general. Anyway, off the top of my head:
Real Estate Investment Banking - Advisory: M&A, Portfolio Brokerage - Public Capital Markets: REIT IPOs and Secondary offerings, Private Equity Placement, Debt Placement - Debt - CMBS, Mez, Public and Private placement, Bridge Lending, Construction Financing - Structured Transactions - JVs, Restructuring and Recaps
Real Estate Private Equity - Opportunitstic Corporate acquisition focused and less of the asset acquisition focused - Debt-strategies - Fund of funds
Real Estate Hedge Funds - They exist but I don't know too much about them.
Asset Management gigs and some jobs at REITs and REOCs start to become less finance focused and much more property focused, so I won't go into those - they are also on the other thread that someone posted.
I don't really know what I mean either, lol. I'm just looking for a big-picture, broad overview. Thanks for the input you guys.
I am also interested in real estate, specifically, real estate development in manhattan/surrounding area. Whats the best way to go about getting an internship at a development company first, as I am a junior in college right now.
Also where can I find a list of developers in the city to target? Thanks for the help.
Have you all been following the news, oh, say the past 3 years? Avoid real estate like the plague.
What about RE now ? Is it still to "avoid like the plague" ?
Anybody know of any Real Estate Finance Firms?? (Originally Posted: 01/17/2013)
Hello people.
I am brand new to this forum and love it.
I am a current third year student at one of the best public school's in the northeast with a GPA of about a 3.5. Pursuing B.S in Management and concentration in finance.
I am looking to get into the Real Estate finance industry.
Specifically any boutique firms that have advisory services while specializing in debt financing, mezzanine financing, preferred equity, joint venture equity and sponsor equity.
Please let me know of any companies you guys know of so I am able to apply for an internship.
Thanks
Not sure about boutiques, but Goldman Sachs is involved in real estate finance.
Like Prospie said, GS is tops in RE. Based on your post, it's obvious you have done a ton of research on the subject. Getting an interview shouldn't be a problem.
A lot of the brokerage firms have debt/equity placement advisory services. Eastdil, CBRE, HFF, JLL, etc. There are boutique firms too.!Just google it and you'll find a lot.

Research Analyst in Real Estate Finance? (Originally Posted: 07/29/2014)
Does anyone have any information regarding specific roles in research in regards to real estate? I tried searching the forums for more information but it seems like one of the more undiscovered sections (even the database).
I just want to know what specific certifications are needed and what skills are especially useful in this arena. Also, if you work in the industry, any knowledge about the lifestyle (hours, travel, etc.) would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance....
This is very vague. What kind of research? Like, working for Costar/Real Capital? Or being an in-house research person at CBRE? Those jobs kind of suck.
If you want to do research related to real estate, look to wall street. Equity research covering real estate, perhaps some sort of fixed income research related to real estate. Green Street is known for equity research but also does some macro research nowadays, and anything at Green Street would be a good opportunity for a young guy.
What would you recommend to pursue if I am looking for a career shift... I am looking for an entry level position in Finance, analyst maybe. The goal is to earn more money and build some sort of a career from there. I am a recent immigrant, I have a BA in Economics, spent 3 years in online marketing (commercial real estate), almost 2 years in administrative position for a real estate developer, I am working on a migration project now for a small company transferring excel records to a loan management software. Is there a role where I can apply some of my experience and skills? I am lost.

I have a few questions for any real estate finance professional if you are willing to let me pm you. I have an interview coming up this week and need a little guidance. Please chime in or pm me.
Somewhat related to my coverage. Happy to discuss if it is actually relevant.
What do you want to know?
Hit me.
I think the main question I have is: what is the best metric to value a property/building? I searched, but didn't find much. If anybody has an excel they may share, I'll pm you my email. Again guys, I greatly appreciate it.
I am just a bit concerned about whether to expect mainly fit or technical questions. I have previous real estate experience as a credit analyst, but have just started covering CRE. My interview is with one of the largest CRE financial services firms as a portfolio analyst.
