Receiving No Work
Hi. I've been interning in this company for three weeks now. However, I have not received any work beside calculating past P&L on excel for the company's different business model, which took me two days. I got sick of sitting on my desk for whole day, doing nothing. What should I do to get more work? Or, should I just quit and spend my summer more effectively? Thank you for your advice in advance.
Try to find some tasks on which you could help or make your superior save time. Be proactive and show that you are willing to learn/do something useful for them.
Read something the company has done in the past, try to find something intersting you don't understand and go ask (meaningful) questions about it.
Good luck!
.
Straight truth.
Show ambition by asking for more work. If you get nothing, look into sharpening your Excel skills with online courses from places such as Udemy, Wall Street Prep, BIWS, etc. These courses are inexpensive and will improve your modeling skills as you move forward in your career.
Is it okay to work on something else other than company material during the internship?
Quitting is the absolute wrong mentality to have. You'll be surprised that a lot of summer interns are in the same boat as you are. Take the initiative to reach out to the folks in your department and proactively learn about what they do. Once you do that enough, you'll get a good understanding of the business & process flows, which is a great learning experience for you. Also, leverage the free time to network not only with people in the company, but others/alumni so you can best position yourself for the next job. When I did a summer internship long time ago in college, just like you, I had a lot of free time. Was it frustrating? Yes. Did I feel I was wasting my time? Yes. These were my initial thoughts. I quickly took a positive light in this opportunity and turned it around by doing the aforementioned things.
Ultimately, your attitude is EVERYTHING. Have a positive attitude and show others that you are driven and eager to proactively learn.
Good luck, my friend!
