Recent alum -- MBB consulting?
Hadn't really done my homework during college, but now really think MBB consulting could be a good fit. Problem: Graduated from a target school (HYP), OK GPA (3.6ish?), but no business-y experience in the three years since then (though travel, research, writing, some save-the-world-y stuff). I can't go through my undergrad's recruiting process any more, and I'm in sort of an in-between space. Tips on breaking in at this point? Thanks for the help!
Can you elaborate on your work experience since graduating? Seems like you'd be a good fit for business school

...as a cookie, network with alumni, they give out way more jobs than people on WSO.
you don't need career services, just have an alum get you an interview. if you graduated from an hyp this should be easy.
if your question was: do they hire ppl who have left undergrad? the answer is yes
Dude - I graduated HYP, did a year and a half at a boutique consulting shop in the South-ish, had a buddy at MBB drop my resume and got an interview the next day. Not because I had worked @ a boutique shop first, but because a current employee vouched for me.
Worked out for both of us, too - I got hired & he got a nice referral bonus. Use your network.
Sorry--I guess I obviously didn't do my homework. I was under the impression that you got an MBB job during on-campus interviewing or else you came back when you were an expert in something. Will start sending out some feelers to alums; thanks, all!
MBB loves HYP. Just network.
Getting into consulting - Graduated 1.5 years ago. (Originally Posted: 12/05/2013)
Hey guys, I wanted to move my career into management consulting and was wondering if people could recommend the best way to move into the industry. Obviously MBB won't take me (without some serious networking at least) but was wondering if there were any other good firms that would hire people with some experience.
My background is as follows: Education: "Public-Ivy" Business / Finance and Math Major w/ a 3.4 GPA.
Experience: 1.5 years at Analyst at a family office (sourcing managers in HF and PE and research on different industries and markets i.e multifamily in X city, would look at census data, rents, vacancies, etc. and performance reporting)
Any recommendations and help is very much appreciated.
why wont MBB take you?
It was my believe that they take only associates right out of undergrad and I don't have experience in consulting. Not saying it's impossible, just saying it's a lot of networking. I'm going to give it a try but wanted to have other options as well.
Bump
I'm in a similar situation and was able to get 4-5 interviews thus far. You need to network hard to get interviews because there's no official process for people in between undergrad and business school at any of the major firms. It's still possible to get an interview if you can get referred by a partner (which for me at least was surprisingly easier than targeting associates/analysts). Good luck!
