Recent Grad with Career Questions

Hey everyone I recently joined the site after reading some of the great posts submitted. I thought that maybe I could get some advice about career moves.

First off I graduated in May 2007 from UTSA (University of Texas at San Antonio)-tier 2, with a degree in finance. My overall GPA was 2.86 and my Major GPA was 3.5.

Currently I have no experience in my field and am having trouble deciding what my next move should be. I understand that IB is definitelly not for me right now and might not ever be for me.

Basically all I am looking for right now is an entry-level position that allows me to gain experience and make some cash.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Get into the Corporate Finance of one of the number of great oil/gas companies based out of Texas. The pay and lifestyle is great, and it gives you exposure that will be valued when you go for your mba (whether you stay in TX and go to UT or Rice or seek a top 10-20 school).

Remember that UT-SA is definately more of a tier 3 or 4 school, any self aware person would ask you why you weren't in the UT-SA 2 yrs then UT-Austin 2yrs program... Alot of people coming out of highschool get that opportunity so not having it means your in the 'bottom bucket' (no offense).

Best of luck.

bryan1 when I graduated from high school I went to a community college for a year because I was a drug addict and had no idea what I was doing in this world. I turned my life around and have been clean for 4 years and was able to transfer and graduate from a 4 year.

um...I don't think you're right for this industry. While the recovering drug addict story would make a great piece for Oprah, I don't think it will go over well during an interview with a major IB. I think you should perhaps look at the construction industry; dry-walling might be your best bet.

Don't be a cocksucker you little twat. This kid is honest enough and everyone has a little bit of party in them, whether you take that to the extreme is another story. In some ways, I'd prefer to have a conversation with a non-bitchass like this UTSA kid rather than you. I can only assume that you're a glass wearing, insecure, freakmonkey with bad acne.

LOL.

Well bryan1, you're obviously an intelligent up and coming business extraordinaire. Definitely management material there big guy...I know plenty like you. I'll bet you $1,000 you're the first one fired during the next downturn in this market. Hope you don't choke on that attitude and those hefty credit card bills trying to live the life that my most junior partners lived 2 years out of college. Next time that social security mailer hits your box, I'd read it this time and start planning for $1,500 a month in your retirement. Enjoy eating cat food.

I am upper management material, I'm easy to get along with, intelligent, and look good in a suit. I've had a great life til' now, traveled the world, and have a great attitude. You on the other hand, are a cold hearted bitch trying to diss some guy at University of Texas at San Antonio (only you would lower yourself to do such a thing). Regarding any potential credit card bill, my rich dad or grandparents would be happy to help me if I needed it, which I don't mothafuka. Having not come on this site for a few days, your response gave me a nice chuckle. Now go back to your cubicle and pull your portable tool out and give it a nice gargle.

LOL!

Haha, that is a girl.

I thought that poster was a guy this whole time... certainly comes off as one. And Stacey, when you mentioned attitude, I'd advise you to watch yours. You seem very arrogant thinking you're better than a construction worker, and extreme arrogance is never a good quality.

That's all I'll say.

Yes, I'm in high school.

Try applying to some operations part of the banks. The jobs are much easier to get than in the IB part and the pay is fine.
What is fine? What if fine isn't enough.

i suggest making a list my friend.. all the options advised here. rank them in YOUR personal preference, set a timeline of how long you will try searching and interviewing for each option, work down the list and stick to it.

operations ain't that bad.. its a decent job with a decent pay and you are able to work up the ranks too.

well just my point of view. guys lets play nice.

Ops isn't bad, but with a 2.85 GPA from a tier 3, he probably wouldn't even get that.

I would agree with those that say to head to Houston or Dallas or Austin and try to hook up with a big energy firm in some corp fin capacity. Would be tough to get into at that, but if you do and you perform well there, you can go and get your MBA.

If you have experience in CorpFin at a F500 and then get into an upper-eschelon MBA program, you'll have a good shot. Especially if you are looking to get into energy and your F500 experience is with an Exxon/Chevron type.

Won't be easy, but I'd bet it's possible. Much crazier events have occurred.
